Re: It is damped, not dampened.

I usually use "muffling" anyways but uh, I don't think this particular vocab is going to swing back around in the dictionaries' favor. Language is a descriptivist act, and there's no ambiguity to be...

Re: Vented snares on open air..

Wow, that's a cranked snare... It has a lot of focus for sure though. If you currently have the 13" Jordison snare I could imagine that sounding a little thin at high tunings since it's only 13...

Re: Vented snares on open air..

You might want to expand more on the first question, but there's a good video demonstrating the effects of three significant levels of muffling on the same drum already:...

Re: Memphis Drum Shop- Is it me, or is this drum shop snare demo really unkind to the drum?

Oh, for sure. And yeah, it's nice to hear stuff when the focus isn't on demonstrating it.

Re: Memphis Drum Shop- Is it me, or is this drum shop snare demo really unkind to the drum?

Yeah, it's a kit demo, not a snare demo. Sure, the snare doesn't sound great, but if the video were demonstrating the snare itself there'd be multiple tunings. I don't know if this is the exact same...

Re: Processing drums in a studio (quantisation, etc) - How should I go about it?

It's a good question given the sound source being electronic. I thought the extended 16th section was good, although the kick should come down about 6 dB in the double bass sections IMO. You can do...

Re: Mark Guiliana or Marcus Gilmore?

the only real answer here.

For real, there is nothing to be gained comparing them as if one of them is (or could be) objectively better. Bring some examples if you want to compare them on some...

Re: Mapex snare - Peacemaker vs Sabre

As far as I can tell, they're literally the same drum, but Mapex discontinued the Peacemaker for some reason (it's not on their website anymore) and reintroduced it as the Sabre with a black finish....

Re: NAMM 2018 New Gear Thread

Meinl has some new stuff, most of the Byzance new ones are in this Bonedo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ikpqd6sQ64

Polyphonic ride sounds great to me. Going to be picking one of those up.

Re: How to Increase Amount of Room for Cymbals to Wobble on DW 9000 Stand?

All you need to do is loosen the wingnut on the top that fastens the top felt. They don't have to be tightened all the way (and most of the time shouldn't be). Pretty much any wingnut can be loosened...

Re: GC used gear

Yeah, they seem to charge $20-30 on nearly every order I've done or checked... which is strange, but, you know. If I'm ordering anything from GC used it's probably a great deal already so I'm not too...

Re: Toms that cut through

Internal mics sound just... weird on two headed toms. Bizarre color. Also, they take up a LOT of internal space on rack toms.

Re: Toms that cut through

Yeah, concert toms can often be a mic's friend because they tend to emphasize attack. The sustain profile is quite different, and less prone to the issue of low tuned mic'd toms where the mic is...

Re: Are click tracks overused?

100% agree. This is an important point too... if the rest of the band can't hear the click, I don't think it's necessarily a good idea for the drummer to use one. I've had plenty of practice...

Re: Toms that cut through

Yup.

Miced up, I think concert toms aren't a terrible idea - and you can combat the bearing edge thing by porting your reso head, cutting out a bunch of it, or using a mesh head for the reso. But...

Re: Heavy sticks

I love heavy sticks. I played MS2s for a bit. But, you have to bring the right tools for the situation. The timbre of a .610" diameter hickory stick with a barrel tip just isn't right for a jazz...

Re: Sonor Safari made of ?

Indeed. There's plenty of praise for the low-end Sonor kits on this forum, they have some magic in them!

Re: Sonor Safari made of ?

I don't think there's a real difference between the different-priced ones you're seeing. I do see that Sam Ash has their Safaris for $390 that's a good price and especially reasonable considering...

Re: Larnell Lewis

Oh, awesome, glad to see him on here.

Check out his playing on the Snarky Puppy album "We Like It Here". Killer. Gave a great clinic at PASIC a couple years back too.

Re: More Carter McLean/Charlie Hunter Trio Goodness

Every set of his just sets me adrift. One of the first drummers I think of when I want some groove. Love the full sets with Charlie.

Re: How Many Cymbals do You Own?

Right now: 2 pairs of hi-hats, 3 splashes, 2 fx/holed cymbals, 2 chinas, 5 crash/rides (2 are jazz rides), and 1 ride (that could still be crashed if you want). So, 17 individual cymbals, 15 minus...

DW "Pure" Maple/Birch/Oak/Cherry kit comparison vid

Saw this today on Youtube, nicely done comparison I think. Not easy to skip around simply but a pleasing lack of heavy processing. I really enjoy the Cherry and Maple, personally.

Re: World's first seamless spun aluminum drum sets

Well, I'm upset... that looks insane. So sumptuous, and the lugs work so well. It's going to be hard to keep my wallet closed.

Re: No crack on recorded snare drum?

Crank those heads! No need to get new ones at the moment, IMO.
