I have a 16x14 Phonic Bd (converted) and 18x16, 20x16 and 22x18 Maple light bass drums. If I were to go for the "Paint the world" BD sound, I would choose the 18".

Tempo for Tom Sawyer is quarter note=88 bpm, you might be able to do it with a single pedal. Otherwise, just do Bonham-triplets.

Take a good look at the "making of the Black Album" videos. The WHOLE KIT is a Gretsch, except the snare. This is no secret, it was mentioned by Lars in drumming mags from the era.
