Re: Ever forgotten your hihat clutch?

yeah, I've forgotten mine a couple of times, and it sux because you get this totally sloppy out of control slosh. I started leaving the clutch on the stand, but sometimes I forget to tighten it, and...

Re: Revisiting My Life in Music: My First Meeting with MD Founder Ron Spagnardi

cool, man. Love those old MD's. The oldest one I have is from 1980 with Carl Palmer on the front. R.I.P Ron!

Re: Chinese Maple vs. Canadian Maple vs. North American Maple?

it's definitely the wood. Both kits are thinner shelled with 6 plies, and I've certainly tried them with the same heads/tuning. Again, it's not a huge difference. A lot of the time it may not even be...

Re: Chinese Maple vs. Canadian Maple vs. North American Maple?

there's definitely a difference in sound between n.a. maple and the chinese maple. It's not a huge difference, but it's there. I've got kits made out of both, and the chinese maple has more attack,...

Re: Snare identification please

if you don't recognize the lugs, and there's no badge, then it's likely a drum made in either China, Taiwan, or Japan for some generic brand. Nothing special either way.

Re: Ludwig Classic Maple Snare - New or Used

it looks like this drum only has 8 lugs? Could be a classic birch if so, although it does look like the badge is gold, which indicates maple. The classic birch snares all had 8 lugs, and a silver...

Re: 14 x 8 Maple Snare

lol, 4 to 5 pieces? I hope it's at least the same species? I do have a friend that has that snare, and it does sound kick ass.

Re: Ludwig Classic Maple Snare - New or Used

well, the Ludwig maple snares made prior to '98 (and after '76 or '77), have a thicker shell (3/8" thick), so if you want a thicker shell Ludwig you will have to buy used. I have one that's 6.5X14...

Re: HELP, permanent beastmode

I've had the exact same problem over the years. The first and quickest thing you can do is go down to the smallest stick size you can manage. You'd be amazed at the difference a smaller stick can...

Re: It Happened Again!!

lol, seriously? I can play everything I go into to the studio with in a whole take. If I can't, then I'm not ready. Of course, everything is easier and quicker if you can punch in, fix mistakes, and...

Re: Thoughts On Phil Collins??

he did some great stuff on Robert Plant's first 2 solo albums, too. Plant always seemed to let the drummers go off on his records, i.e. Richie Hayward also who played some killer stuff on Shaken and...

Re: Amplified Bass drum sound problem.

I think a lot of it is laying the mic inside the drum. I've had issues with that in the past, and my kick doesn't have much resonance. When you hit the kick it probably makes the mic bounce a little,...

Re: peace sells drum track

actually, Gar could handle it plenty well. Sometimes he would drop the left kick in a typical pattern where everyone would usually do the 4 on the floor, and it would give it a different sound. He...

Re: Ludwig Supraphonic -50th year edition

weren't supras made before '64? I know I've seen some with transition badges, but maybe they weren't referred to as supras yet. And, not a fan of this new badge. Give me the good old ugly blue/olive...

Re: Help identifying Mapex snare

definitely older, and from the 90's. Wouldn't know the wood type without seeing the inside. They didn't make cheap models in that size, so it's likely maple or birch.

Re: Premier Resonator snare drum liner?

if it's a "resonator" then it should have the liner, as that's what makes it a "resonator". The snare I played had one, so someone must have taken the chamber out of this one. Honestly, it made the...

Re: Played a Pearl BCX set. Very warm sound for all birch

I always wanted a blx kit, and still do. I noticed they really heavily coated the insides of the shells, which may have had something to do with the focus, and lack of warmth.

Re: Gretsch Renown or Tama Starclassic B+B

that has not been my experience at all. I saw my buddy play last night on his Renowns, and those suckers cut like crazy! I've heard a couple of Silverstars, and they don't cut that well at all from...

that pedal is worth more than the kit, provided it's in working condition.

Re: Ludwig Bronze Piccolo - A good buy?

yeah, 3X13 is a real small/minimal shell size, so there won't be a huge difference in the sounds you can get. But, if you can manage to get a bronze supra for 200$, you don't have anything to lose...

Re: Bearing Edge Dressing

I shellac the insides of pretty much all the drums I make. It doesn't really make a huge difference in sound to my ears, but it is always with keller maple shells, so maybe other woods would be...

Re: Pearl Sensitone phosphor bronze snares available again

yeah, I'm disappointed in how expensive the new sensitones are. They probably see people paying 700$ for black beauties, and all the other boutique drums for 1000$ + and figure they'll try their hand...

Re: Ludwig Piccolo Snare - Need A Manufacture Date

yep, just as they did on the last Blackrolites. I don't know what the b/w badge means anymore, as they started out using them on the u.s. made Rockers, then the blackrolites, but I'm assuming these...

Re: What is your opinion of this Billy Cobham review?

ha ha, Cobham is Cobham. That's why I love him- he's loud, busy, and does his own thing. A lot of people used to typical lighter hitting fusions guys probably are turned off by his style, because it...
