Re: 13" Snares

Short answer: yes. I have a 13x5.5 Keller that is my baby. IMHO 13s are much fuller-sounding at higher tunings than 14s. I think the tendency is to crank them, but I find if I go with a medium tuning...

Re: Identify that subdivision

Honestly, most of what is going on in that section sounds like straight 16ths and 32nds to me. Before and after is another story altogether though...

Re: Trying to get more low end.

It's kind of counter-intuitive, but I've found tuning the reso fairly high and leaving it unmuffled allows for a longer low sort of boooom. I tune my batter loose with a ring, so I still get a nice...

Re: How would you transcribe this roll? (video)

Sound/look like singles to me. Check out the beginning of DMB 'Drive In Drive Out' for a very similar riff. It's just two 32nds followed by two 16ths, etc. I would play it RLR_L_RLR_L_RLR_etc...

Re: New Intermediate Snare

+1 for a free-floater, but I would recommend a new set of skins and some Puresounds first. You may also want to check out Gatzen's tuning vids on YouTube. Tuning is an art!

Re: tama starcast mounts externally available?

I ordered one for my 14" from Guitar Center. It was $110, so they are a bit pricey...

Re: wood hoops question

IMHO, S-Hoops are the perfect compromise. They offer a fatter rimshot, and won't eat sticks nearly as rapidly as flanged or DC hoops. I use them on all my snares!

Re: 14 x 4 Snare Recommendations Please

How about a Pearl free-floater? They're excellent drums for the money, and you can buy different shells for a song, especially in the piccolo size.

If you want to to the metal thing, the WorldMax...

Re: 3 piece kits

I use a 14" rack in the FT position and a 20" A Custom Ride that crashes well... Those plus kick, hats, and snare help to keep me focused on the groove! I love playing this way, but I'll occasionally...

Re: 14" x 6.5" Wood Snares

You might want to try to find a used Pearl Free-Floater on eBay. They're very versatile and a great value...

Re: Old Mars Volta Time Signature Cycle

It's 9:16, then 6:8, then 2:4. I don't really know how you'd write something like this, but suffice it to say there are 29 16th notes per loop... Try 'No Twilight Within The Courts Of The Sun' by...

Re: I wished I never sold?

Had a full set of REAL Slingerlands that I let a friend borrow. Never saw 'em again. Sweet, natural grain finish. The perfect jazz kit... Sigh.

Re: Praticising with a 'click"/metronome.

I like to play really slow (60 bpm) and set the click to play for a measure and then drop out for three. I personally have more of a tendency to rush than drag, so this really helps me learn the...

Re: 12" rack tom and 16" floor tom - thoughts?

I had 8, 10, 12, 14, 15 when I was a kid, but eventually whittled it down to 10, 12, 15. The heads are a bit of a pain to find in stock, but IMHO it's worth it. 15 is juuuust right... Now if only...

Re: Looking to buy new cymbal(s)

Second the eBay idea. Cymbals really only get better with age; if you're not too hung up on the shiny new cymbal thing you can get a whole pile of used cymbals for $1k. Keep the ones you like; resell...

Re: Need Advice

If you want the ultra-dry punchy D&B thing, try aggressively muffling some of the drums. JoJo Meyer does some pretty cool things with his setup to get this sound...

Drums are loud dude. What you...

Re: PLEASE HELP ! SO PISSED

Heads matter son. Get an Ambassador or a G1 tuned medium-high and put a Snare-side Ambassador or a Hazy 300 on the bottom tuned a bit higher than the batter. Also, get some Puresounds; they work!

That FF should take care of your wood snare jones ;) Sooooo, here're some metal ideas:

The Ahead 6 X 14 brass is simply dope, though the Fat Cat snare wires tend to fall apart. S-Hoops are...
