Re: Even Jo Jo Drops A Stick Now & Then-Nerve Live

Tommy,

The stick drop happens at about 4:38, near the end of the first song :)

Re: Cool Tuning

Ok, no worries. I didn't realise that you identified these instruments as not having a harmonic series.

I've not got a great deal of experience with harmonicas, but this article at least suggests...

Re: Loud drums

This is a really interesting discussion!

A few thoughts:

If we're comparing two different drums struck in exactly the same way, the two drums are being provided with the same input energy. If...

Re: Cool Tuning

Rockon! I agree that you can definitely perceive intervals between toms and I try to tune according to them too. I tune my bottom heads tighter than my top, so I also make sure each drum has the same...

Re: Cool Tuning

Due to the enclosed shape of a tymp, its large diameter and where it is struck, most of a tympani's prominent overtones do actually follow the harmonic series very closely. Hence, we hear a fairly...

Re: Cool Tuning

SmoothOperator,

I don't understand what you are saying. Could you try rewording it?

I like to think I have a pretty decent understanding of the harmonic series and its relevance to musical...

Re: Cool Tuning

I guess I'm in the 'drums can't be tuned' camp. The overtones produced by a two-headed drum don't form a harmonic series, and so we generally don't discern a musical pitch from them. Sure, you could...

Re: Ever forgotten your hihat clutch?

Thanks for the feedback and advice everyone, it's reassuring to know it's happened to others too!

I disassemble my hihat stand and put the rod inside the tubing when I tear down the kit, so I'm...

Re: Ever forgotten your hihat clutch?

We're the only band - three hour pub gig! But I did throw some gaff on; it sounds.. okay..

Lesson very thoroughly learned - if you're gonna keep your clutch in your pedal case, bring a spare...

Ever forgotten your hihat clutch?

...I just did. Setting up for the gig now. No time to go back home For it..

I guess we're sloshing our way through tonight!!

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

I feel like we are not understanding each other. Sexism is massively frowned upon in my group of friends also. I'm saying that often the ways in which it happens can be so subtle that we don't...

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

Porter - right on! The same attitude is prevalent in so many parts of life, or least so many 'isms', and it can be hard to know what exactly is even contributing to the problem.

Mikel and Picodon...

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

I've been reading this thread with lots of interest and, if I may, I'd like to offer an observation:

Sexism is a very real thing and it is disgusting. On that I'm sure 99% of us can agree....

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Cheers guys! I've been playing the same Premier Cabrias and XS20s for over 9 years now. I certainly got my money's worth out them, but the toms aren't holding their tune very well anymore and half...

Re: 30 songs in 6 days.

That sounds like a fairly good plan! Are you transcribing the songs, or just commiting them to memory? For me, it's easiest if I sit down with a pen and paper and spend an hour writing cheat sheets...

Re: Songs that are recognizable just by the beat

Superstition - Stevie Wonder .. has a very recognisable intro. One of the few songs I've launched into at a gig and had people clearly recognise before the guitar came in.

Re: 100BPM "solo issue"

I vote for this. Right now I have a click playing through my speakers at 100bpm, and the funky drummer break is sounding pretty good in my ears over it.. It also happens to be exactly 8 bars long on...

Re: If you could only have a 4-piece cymbal setup, what would it be?

Haha, four cymbals? My last half dozen gigs have been played with only a pair of 13" Meinl extra dry hats and a 20" extra dry ride.

If I had to use four cymbals, at this stage, I'd probably go:...

Re: Help Bass Drum decision

The kick will sound fine with the rest of the kit. However I also think your current kick will sound just fine as well. If you're playing hard rock, presumably you'll be mic'd up for any gigs you...

Re: How often do you use the butt-ends when playing?

I only ever play with the butt of my left stick if I don't have time to switch back after playing a rim click. Which, given that I'm terrible at spinning sticks in my hand, is surprisingly...

Re: "Smaller Kit Syndrome"

For me most of the time, I find the extra toms and cymbal stands end up being nothing more than extra cases to carry from the car. My hardware bag is generally ridiculously light because all that's...

Re: "Smaller Kit Syndrome"

That's bigger than any kit I've gigged on in the past few years :P.

I generally take as little kit as I think I can get away with on a given gig. I'll take both a rack and a floor tom if I really...
