Re: Auditioning for another band

Although this would seem to be the right approach, it's probably not. There are lots of songs, and the band might play some tunes a bit differently than the recording. Learn to make charts, and...

Re: Auditioning for another band

Want to be a better musician? Go get a gig that kicks your butt a little. Are you a man or a mouse? :)

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

That makes sense, and it rolls off the tongue better than "unison shuffle". But you could just as easily argue that it's not the pattern played by the right hand, but rather how the rhythm is...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

Todd -- kind of surprised to hear you take such a relaxed approach to this one.

Sure, the blues shuffle police aren't going to come to your home and arrest you, but it matters to some band leaders...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

Short answer: both.

The longer answer is that you want to get to the point where accenting certain notes (or leaving certain note UN-accented) is a musical decision, and not something you do just...

Re: HELP: Which road do I take?

About your band's "future success"...

What's your arrangement with the original band? Are you an equal owner of mechanical and publishing rights? Is your cut of the pie smaller, because the...

Re: Need Some Advice About Studying Drumming Intensively in South America and USA

You sound like a good candidate for a cruise ship drummer! The good thing about cruise ships is that you'll really challenge your fundamental skills as you're playing gigs. You'll read charts, play...

Re: Playing for Teacher

Funny thing about mirrors and 35,000 people: neither one knows much about playing the drums, nor do they care about YOU all that much. Your teacher knows lots about drumming, and cares about you,...

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

First of all, nice work! Lots of great ideas, dynamics, and overall great feel and sound.

Agree with Kamak here. When the band actually tracks together, the sound of the ensemble will...

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

Are you being paid, and would you like more work? If the answer is yes to those, then abandon completely the idea of sounding like you. Do your homework in the style of the song, and play the most...

Re: Tips to help me get in a good quality functions band.

You would use a small personal mixer, and plug your IEMs into that. Into the mixer, you would connect a signal from the click, a signal from the pre-recorded track, and a signal from the band's...

Re: Upgrade From Yamaha DP... 60's Ludwig?

Have you considered piecing together a black diamond kit? Maybe you can find some orphans on eBay, and save some money.

Modern heads will fit tightly, but they should fit. Trimming away the wrap...

Re: Carmine Appice Lobbies For Led Zeppelin Drum Spot

When the surviving members of Led Zeppelin refuse to re-unite, under the banner "Led Zeppelin", they are stating, unequivocally, that their drummer, John Bonham, was so integral to the sound of their...

Re: About getting paid

Agreed. Going "by the song" is problematic, since some songs require more time than others. An hourly approach doesn't let people relax enough. Going by the day is a good in-between. $200/day...

Re: About getting paid

Discuss the finances too early and you risk seeming too concerned with money. Nevermind that collecting royalties of any kind is nearly a thing of the past for new artists.

Say yes until you...

Well isn't this the million dollar question?

And it probably will be fun, so you should acknowledge that when speaking with him. If you make it seem like you hate this sort of work, he's less...

Yes, but the seller may not have exactly what was ordered. So just return them, and understand that you might be on the hook for return shipping costs. Look at the seller's return policy before you...

Re: Upgrade From Yamaha DP... 60's Ludwig?

OK, glad to hear that some have found that hardware useful! I'm surprised -- it only took one set up for me to decide to upgrade parts; things were just that bad. Couldn't mount the tom without it...

Re: Upgrade From Yamaha DP... 60's Ludwig?

If you go for 3-ply Ludwigs (and you should!), it's a pretty much a given that you'll need to upgrade the hardware. Fortunately, modern replacements are easy to find.

A 22" 60's Ludwig bass drum...

Re: Band vent....

Yep, rehearsals become lengthy when someone is practicing during rehearsal. The only thing you can do is minimize how much time of yours' gets wasted. For example, let the band know in advance that...

Re: Drumming as Art

Yes! Also, expect these gigs to not pay very well. Weeknights are best, so they don't interfere with your weekend gigs.

Re: Some advice needed re: accuracy of songs

Just to be thorough -- there are gigs where getting the details of a recording exactly right is just not how success is measured, but they are usually jazz/fusion/blues/improv gigs and not pop/rock...

Re: Keep an antique set safe for the travels

Statistically speaking, the biggest danger to a drum set isn't aggressive playing, or even drunken crowds, it's a car accident. Having the drums in padded hard shell cases is about the best you can...

Re: How to handle this situation

To protect your friends, you shouldn't say anything. And you don't need to, anyway.

Just say instead that you've heard around town what wedding band pay usually is, and ask for it (once you've...
