Re: Making $ playing drums

Yes!

Actually, I spend $90/month for my portion of our practice space. Throw in sticks, heads, the occasional cymbal or drum, and sum that over 30+ years of playing ... my "profit" is such a...

Re: Should I Do It?

I had the same issues come up when I was in college and always took the gigs.

True, there are no do-overs for exams (unless you fail the class and need to retake it), but there are no do-overs at...

Re: Bid like a man!

Actually, it's not that good for the seller since the fees are pretty steep. The fee is based on the TOTAL sale price, which means they even get a cut of the shipping cost! Then there's the PayPal...

Re: Bid like a man!

That's a pretty common strategy, actually. If you don't want to get outbid at the last second, make sure your bid is high enough - your counter bid happens automatically this way.

And you don't...

Re: You and your practice regimen, come clean

I've never really practiced anything formal, like exercise type things. I just sit at my kit and go for whatever seems interesting. Fortunately, it's rare that I can't think of something interesting...

Re: Matched Grip vs. Traditional Grip: Pro's and Con's?

While I can totally agree that there isn't a compelling reason for choosing one over the other, I don't agree that learning both makes one more well-rounded. Not unless it's needed for the visual...

Re: Does your gear HAVE to be the same brand or do you mix/match?

They don't have to all match, but they mostly do.

Kick and toms always do just by default. I've never had a collection of orphan drums, so that's never come up.

Snares can be whatever they...

Re: Effects of snare depth on tuning?

What you're really getting with that extra depth is a slightly longer and smoother response from impact to snare response. The longer air column gives a sense of cushion and fatness - air being...

Re: Benefits of studying jazz intensely for a couple years

Two things that come to mind right off are the ability to play with swing and a much increased vocabulary. In addition to those, you learn to be more of a participant in the music.

I don't play...

Re: Blues jam session ... play simple - receive big applause

This isn't unique to blues though, IMO.

The band I'm in atm is anything but since there's a ton of odd-time things going on and it's not using the standard forms. These guys are really focused on...

Re: Matched Grip vs. Traditional Grip: Pro's and Con's?

Actually, I'm amazed what a polarizing topic this is over on TalkBass. Worse than trad vs matched is here. "Real bass players use their fingers and picks are for guitars," - except Macca, Chris...

Re: Electronic & Acoustic Drums in the same song

Bill Bruford used a very cool hybrid kit on the early to mid '80s King Crimson records: Discipline, Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pair.

Good stuff.

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

Original vs cover matters a great deal if you're trying to compose your own part. I'm not talking about unleashing a barrage of chops willy-nilly, but choices like whether something should be half...

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

The gist of it is this: the model in classical is one where a composer works in solitude writing the parts and defining what the players are going to play. It's typically very structured and...

Re: Self Indulgent Ego Massage....

That's some good karma right there. Not that I believe in any supernatural piece of that, but it sounds like he's appreciated how cool you guys have been to him and is wants to repay you for that....

Re: Turning Pro

I completey agree with Bermuda.

If you take the view that it just means making all or part of your living from playing, then you have to accept that it's independent of having a higher than usual...

Re: How to stop playing slightly ahead of the beat?

Great insight, especially that last paragraph. My biggest hang up with my own playing is where my natural feel lands, which is back beats that fall too far behind and a tendency to over compensate...

Re: Personality Influences Playing

When I was a kid, I loved drum solos and lucky for me, most of the big concerts I went to back then featured drum solos. That was early '80s arena rock and most of the solos were actually pretty...

Re: Superstitious Minds

Not sure if this qualifies as a superstition, but I never buy only one pair of sticks. What if you drop one? Then you reach for an older one and now they feel mismatched. For me, they can both be old...

Re: Why doesn't anyone make quieter drums?

Okay, fair enough, Larry.

Just seems to me that the OP was in a situation where he was already exercising the utmost control and restraint and was still too loud. I have to take it on faith, based...

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

All true.

Playing other people's music is definitely how I learned to play and shaped how I see the instrument, and music in general. I still sit at home learning covers, but that never translated...

Re: Why doesn't anyone make quieter drums?

You lost me, Larry. Who here has said anything about not understanding the value of control? The closest one who's said anything remotely like that would be me.

I don't consider myself lazy in the...

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

I've only ever sat in for a few songs with cover bands but it was a lot of fun and I can definitely see the appeal of playing a broad set of styles with familiar material. But if I were ever to...

Re: Do you have your own sound?

You think so? I dunno. Based on the article's opening paragraph, I think you're right on:

"So, what's your sound? No, I don't mean what kind of music you play. I mean, what sound do you get from...

Re: Do you have your own sound?

You and me both!

One thing I've noticed playing bass, and trolling the bass player forums got me to thinking a lot about how we, on this forum, talk more in absolutes about drum tuning. I don't...
