Re: Snare Drum made from Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe

This Pipe snare is crazy cool and sounds very big too. Good job!

Re: Jim Chapin on open rolls(Double stroke roll)

Marco Minnemann mentioned accenting the 2nd hit of the double stroke roll in one of his videos. I think he said Jim Keltner turned him onto the idea.

This thread is exactly why I do so love this place. :)

Re: Ebay dissapointment

evilBay has shifted favour much more towards buyers, to the point where I don't even want to sell on it anymore.

But if a seller screwed up that badly, you're more than justified in returning them...

Re: Thoughts on switching from upbeat to downbeat (thrash metal)

I'm having a problem just counting along with punk/polka/blast beat rhythms with the bass leading.

Not having that snare buried on the 2 & 4 drives my brain nuts.

Re: Are E-kits only good for practicing at home?

I've heard Rod Morgenstein playing an e-kit in a pro situation. It doesn't matter who is on it, it never sounds real. Or right.

Re: 5x16 inch (diameter) snare...anyone?

I have Kenny Aronoff's signature 4x15 and it's quite a bear to tune well. I really hate that it sounded so good when I bought it and I cannot make it sound that good again.

I really wouldn't want...

Re: Looking for a new snare drum

Tama Starclassic G Brass. I saw a band open for the Winery Dogs and the drummer was rocking one of these. Sounded amazing and looks great too.

If I weren't looking to sell snares, I'd probably...

Re: what are some great books about drummers you have read.

I'll second (third?) that. What a fun read.

I own the Bill Bruford book but have yet to read it.

I really liked Neil Peart's "Masked Rider" book though it's not much about drumming. His...

Re: The "Jimi Hendrix of drums"

Silly conversation. There is no Jimi Hendrix of drums.

And anyone that says Hendrix was just a blues player is not worth engaging in a conversation.

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

The more I think back on this film the less I like it.

The part where he kicks the one "screw up" out of the band makes no sense.

And the entire setup to the ending makes no sense at all.

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

It's one of those movies that will probably seem realistic to someone who isn't a musician (esp. a drummer).

Overly melodramatic. And I didn't like any of the characters except the girlfriend.

Re: Simon Phillips talks 'bout open handed, dynamics, big sound and recording :)

Thanks for the video links. Simon is such an amazing player. His playing on Derek Sherinian's solo CDs is criminally overlooked (as are those CDs, they're scary good, IMO).

Well... when you...

Doesn't the differing depths make them TONALLY different rather than PITCH different?

Re: Tama Starclassics!

For years, I thought the Performers sounded BETTER than the maple SC kits.

It's all in what you want to hear when you slam a stick down. :)

Re: Those of you who have "sound proofed" a room for your drums...

JUST wondering... have you tried asking your nearest neighbor to turn off their stereos and TVs and just listen to see if they can even hear you playing your loudest in the far room at 9pm?

Re: How do you save up for gear purchases?

Funny to see this today, Paypal just upped my limit for the "PayForItLater" thing.

I've used this to good effect, getting 6 months with no interest, then just paying it off at the last minute.

Re: how much are used tama brass snares going for?

It sure seems as though you not going to get any Tama BB snares for less than $1000 US, at least not from evilBay.

I've never seen a Bell Brass in person to hear one either. The "mystique" of...

If you do not own it, the 2008 release ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA DVD set is truly amazing.

Seeing that first tour live in 2006 blew me away. Probably the most amazing display of technical musical...

Re: StarClassic 100% birch

As soon as Tama came out with the Performer (all birch) kits, I fell in love. I played them side by side at a local store and liked the birch much better than the maple. I never understood how the...

Re: Will Calhoun

I have the Luna and the Ambient rides, plus the Mad Hats and the Alien Disc. They're all great cymbals.

The Luna is what I call my "Musical Anvil". It's thick, heavy and musical. Great for its...

Re: Attractive female drummers

I'd be much more impressed by girl drummers like Emannuelle Caplette if they'd post LIVE videos in a band setting.

She has one live video, a snare drum solo, out of all of the videos she posts on...
