The Rarest Mapex Black Panther in the World? :)

Just kidding, but there is only one of them - my one!

I just finished this project today: prettying up a 10x5.5 maple BP with a sheet of stunning Elm burr veneer. The project took several hours...

Re: Tension rod on snare drum broke.

Never known this to happen before - there must have been a weakness in the steel because a tension rod should have very high tensile strength (the clue is in the name, LOL).

Re: What do you class as hard to play

I agree with most of the folks here - playing something WELL is the most difficult thing to do.

I always used to teach my pupils never to consider anything (even a 4/4 rock groove) "easy," because...

Re: Sick drummer (Dream Theater)

Not to mention that this is getting a lot of attention in the General Discussion section of the forum...

And if I'm being completely honest (and not meaning to be tactless), the drumming is...

Re: Playing Swing to a Click Track

+1

There's nothing particularly bad about it... it's just that the time is virtually straight in some places and it clashes with the instrumental accompaniment, and there are parts where it...

Re: Anyone study the snare drum seriously?

Really sad to see such a stinking attitude come from a guy who is clearly a very able drummer.

Back on topic, I think snare drum is especially important for drummers who want to be proficient in...

Re: Anyone study the snare drum seriously?

Yes I study snare drum seriously, privately, for my own joy and education. Styles and techniques for snare drumming are incredibly varied which is why it's good to be aware of it.

IMO, Scottish...

Re: So who here thinks they are a good drummer?

So sad to see this thread die!

I would say I'm a good drummer - good enough to get paying work!

But I also TOTALLY agree with the sentiments here, including

I will never be happy with my...

Re: Speed: Moeller vs Standard Wrist Strokes vs Finger control

Absolutely - I'm not saying that techniques should never be combined to form hybrid techniques; I'm saying that if the wrist can achieve three strokes with one movement, why bother using fingers? It...

Re: Speed: Moeller vs Standard Wrist Strokes vs Finger control

And that's my point - I think using one technique at a time is more economical. Why use fingers with moeller wrist movement when you don't have to use the fingers? That's the point I was trying to...

Re: Speed: Moeller vs Standard Wrist Strokes vs Finger control

Nice warm up vid :)

I would agree with the guys who say that "there is no one technique for speed." In your warm up video you are using fingers in groups of six; the same thing could be achieved...

Re: Speed: Moeller vs Standard Wrist Strokes vs Finger control

I've always understood (and taught) the Moeller technique to be one of many ways to achieve speed as well as power. The first tutor to teach me the Moeller technique worked me through Dom Famularo's...

Re: Cliff Almond here.....

No problem Cliff. Read your blog - it's great - and left you a comment. I could actually write a thesis on practice (I'm sure many people could) but I tried to be succinct for your blog!

Re: Cliff Almond here.....

Cliff, I recently found some of your more "rare" stuff on youtube - Akiko Yano - and it's very tasteful groovery! It's definitely in stark contrast to the likes of "Caribe" (from OMO) which is, in...

Re: How much does the casual fan notice mistakes

I think this is a very difficult question to answer. It depends on the context of the gig (wedding gig, jazz cafe, showcase etc) and it depends why people are there. If you are playing to a bunch...

Re: What size is your main snare? Why?

I use whatever snare sounds best. My first was a Mapex Black Panther maple piccolo 13x3, and then I used an Omar Hakim 13x5 for 8-9 years, and now I'm using another Black Panther, this time a...

Re: Simon Wright

His live solo material reminds me a lot of Peart/Lombardo. Not my cup of tea I'm afraid. :)

Re: BASS DRUM TUNING

I've now got a 22x20 Mapex Meridian Birch kick and, if I'm brutally honest, it sounds better than my DW 22x18 kick did with the same heads/tuning.

Both heads are tuned just past finger tight, and...

Re: Mapex Meridian Maple - the waiting game...

I was looking for a Meridian Maple recently but the only one they had left was the Cobalt Blue and I really didn't want it, so I ended up getting a Meridian Birch instead and couldn't be happier.

Re: Fills - When to Double

I agree with Dr Watso - it depends what sound you're after, and if your technique is up to scratch. Singles and doubles should sound similar, depending on tempo of course, but you shouldn't use...

If these guys were clean shaven, the music would definitely suck. :D

Re: What do you put in your bass drum?

A very (extremely) thin synthetic pillow. Sounds freaking amazing. Nothing in the kick is too resonant for my taste.

Re: THE GOOD SNARE THREAD

I just bought this beauty on ebay and have had it now for four days. It's in "used" condition, but considering its age I'm very happy with it - no rust or bad marks, just very minor (but extensive)...

Re: Why is it important to memorize?

Yeah I agree - all types of memorizing are important, but (as with any aspect of practice) there has to be a balance: for me, learning individual phrases is every bit as important as memorizing...
