I would say that both going by what i've both heard&read his reso head was tuned to the pitch of a banjo head or in 4ths.His batter either medium-tight or tight or interms of pitch in 3rds.Now i DONT...

I ALLWAYS clean the tension rods with INOX MX3 300g (better then both CRC&WD 40 as it,s NON runny,&NON toxic), i also lubricate any hinges (hi-hat/kick pedal)replace tension rod washers&cymbal...

I have a similar problem &my kick is unmuffled( i play a 26" kick with Remo coated Emperor batter&Ludwig coated resonant head) , as well as i can,t hear the music! :(.
I don,t play thru headphones...
