Re: Danny Carey vs Neil Peart

If you were going down the street and the wheels fell off your canoe, how many pancakes would you use to fix the doghouse?

Re: tom angles!!!!

I'm more curious how he's typing if both his arms are gone.

Re: Value of Pasic?

Personally, I always thought 13 was too many. I'm not knocking rudiments as a development/practice tool -- I learned most of what I know from marching snare drum -- but I could never see a reason to...

Re: St Anger snare drum...

Wow.

Somewhere there's a special needs room with a few empty helmets.

Re: Drum Dimensons Mix Up

If there were any real "correct" way from an engineering standpoint, it would be with the diameter first. If you're talking about a pipe or something, it's diameter by length.

Come to think of...

Re: Drum Dimensons Mix Up

I'm an engineer (currently laid off, but anyway....) and diameter-first makes more sense to me too. Personally, I just try to be real specific, something like "12-inch diameter by 9-inch depth," or...

Re: Bass drum

I took the mount off my Pro-M bass, and didn't replace it with anything. Not sure exactly what you have, but I just removed all the hardware and left the bolts and rubber gaskets tightened down so...

Re: Cutting Hi-hat rod... Advice?

I did this once.... just used a hand saw to cut it, and regular old sandpaper was enough to take off anything sharp. Then I added a Jack In The Box antenna ball, and it never looked better. :-)

Re: tom angles!!!!

I didn't know Fender made drums..... great deal though, you even get the pads and a chair with it! I'm assuming the simbells are thrown in as well.

Re: Going from a 3pc to a 6pc

Standard problem I would think, you've got to re-train all your old muscle memory of where each old drum is going to be, plus learning the new ones. Maybe you could try adding 1 tom at a time into...

Re: What are your Drumming Prejudices?

For my own prejudices, I guess my biggest (beginner) one was that I would assume less notes played indicated a less talented drummer, as if pocket/groove drummers were less talented than fast, showy,...

Re: Set up/Breakdown

I always used to enjoy the pre-show setup ritual, provided it wasn't too rushed. It's kind of therapeutic (sp?), it gives you time to ease into "the zone," and get anything that isn't drumming out...

I'll take two!

Can I use it to angle my simbles too?

Re: Why The Drums?

Hmmm.... well, the single percussionist in my first school band couldn't count to 4 to save her life, and I realized that I despised the clarinet I was playing at the time, so it seemed like an...

Drum Making

Some drum building questions I've been wondering about. No plans on actually doing this, but I've always been curious to see if I could someday make my own set of drums.

1.) Seems like every...

Re: Flat Tom's

Personally, I think the dead-flat tom thing is more about following the current trend and trying to look cool than it is about ease of playing, just like it was all about those insane tom angles back...

Re: Flat Tom's

I know I went through all kinds of experimentation with tom placement and angles back when I still had my kit.

At one end of the spectrum I had a setup with all of my toms (8-10-12-14-16-18) in...

Re: tom angles!!!!

Ha ha.... you know at some point this guy said something like "Dude, I'm selling my drums, my arms hurt from playing the toms, and for some reason I just can't get my bass drum to stop moving!"

Re: tom angles!!!!

That poor abused Mapex kit....

So, other than the flames, and what I can only assume are hand-drawn decals by Mr. iluv2bang91 himself (this whole post just screams class, doesn't it?), is the...

Re: Drum Solos

Well, I haven't been in a band for a long time, and I've only ever done cover & worship bands, but here goes:

(1.) If we didn't like it at least a little, would we still perform? Not a main...

Re: Can jogging improve your speed or slow you down?

Unless you're damaging your drumming muscles, or playing tired, I don't think anything that builds muscle or stamina could make you slower.

I can't prove it, but I think I do better with both the...

Re: Anybody else play with socks/bare feet?

Yeah, me too. Not a conscious decision really, but I started just playing in my bedroom, so I was always in socks. Then when I started playing out with shoes on, it just never felt right.

Re: tom angles!!!!

Do people actually play these setups, or do they do this because they think it shows off the toms better or something? I mean, even if they never took a lesson, have they never seen a drummer? How...

Re: Best Drum Track Of All Time

If it hasn't been mentioned already:

The title track to "Lateralus" by Tool, particularly the softer middle section of the song.

I mean, come on, a 9-minute polyrhythmic rock song using the...

Re: Rebounding from dismissal

Wow, I'm always amazed at the number of times I hear of this happening in praise bands. Though I've always thought the behind-the-back replacement was unethical in any band. It's kind of like...
