Re: remembering a tune

Start memorizing them as they come up-- in a few months you'll know everything your local people are playing. It's probably not that many tunes.

It's not a big deal-- if you've played a tune...

I've written a few things about this that might be of interest/helpful:

Species of ride cymbal interpretation...

Re: What are the stories behind famous drummers kits?

Here's Elvin Jones talking about it in his '82 MD interview:

Whatever the reason people started using the 18", it has not stuck around for ~55 years as the standard jazz drum only for...

John von Ohlen has died

Great drummer and band leader from Cincinnati-- great drummer, and mentored a hell of a lot of people.

Excerpts from his Modern Drummer interview...

Re: What's your favorite cover (maybe limit to 2-3 songs) that your band plays right now?

I like to open the last set with Blood by Paul Bley (https://youtu.be/cev1g5BfuVQ).

We also cover Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine (http://toddbishop.bandcamp.com/track/only-shallow), which I...

Re: What is the cleverest instruction given to you by a music director?

Re: What is the cleverest instruction given to you by a music director?

I just appreciate it when someone actually knows what they want, and says it.

Favorite example was at USC, the lab band director was in Woody Herman's band, Basie's band, played on some Chick...

Re: Drummerís Place In Band

None of them know shit. I mean very few of them. Least of all the ones who talk about it all the time-- usually they're deflecting responsibility for their insecurity about it onto the drummer. I get...

Re: Tony Williams

That is an interesting record-- I've never seen it before, ever. I really used to massacre the cutout bins for records with Tony on them, too. I'll be listening to that a lot this week.

If anyone...

Re: Drummerís Place In Band

Pretty much this (https://youtu.be/yJthVb8tqUA?t=41s). Good musicians-- drummers included-- know that the drummer is extremely important.

Following Spreggy's comment-- to actually have something...

Re: The Speed Limit

If there's a speed limit it isn't physical, it's aural-- it's the point where individual notes start blending together and making a long tone, on whatever instrument is being played. Any able bodied...

Re: hit a brick wall, my rolls suck!

You can do an initial assessment with a video, but actual teaching has to be done live-- either in person or on skype. It's a process where you say something, the person guesses what you mean and...

Re: hit a brick wall, my rolls suck!

This. A good teacher can get you going the right direction with this in 1-3 lessons... at least so you can work on it productively by yourself.

Also what Bo said. You get better by doing it, a lot.

That's a big ol' drum set. I think it's the sizes.

Re: Help With Clave Rhythm

No route, it's a simple point about not drawing too many wild conclusions just from listening to a video and applying some very half-assed political theory, as you are doing. There are people who...

Re: What brands holds their value the most

Plenty of giant 70s Gretsch sets nobody wants, too-- sellers never seem to grasp that fact. And useless weird-sized Sonor sets that were super expensive new. DW is the only major brand it never even...

Eurocentrism is not a "they" so I don't know what you mean here. I'm just pointing out that there was an actual genocide followed by a massive cultural erasure...

Re: Help With Clave Rhythm

Yes, but we don't know where they got it. Don't assume it's original to the music just because they're doing it now.

Uneven spacing is what makes something a rhythm rather than just a pulse-- it...

Re: Insurance for my drums...how? who?

You should also be able to get them covered cheaply through your renter's insurance-- any major carrier can do that.

Re: Help With Clave Rhythm

To me syncopation implies the presence of a steady pulse, and clave implies some kind of rhythmic elaboration. Neither of those are happening here, that I can detect. The rhythmic framework is...

Re: Stick moves horizontally instead of vertically

To deal with whatever sloppiness you're worried about, fix the actual sloppinessó pay attention to where your notes are sounding, and fix that. As you do that you'll find the technique you need for...

Re: Pain in wrist...is there anything wrong with my technique?

What you're doing there looks pretty low impact. The main potential problem I see is that your back fingers appear to be off the stick most of the time, meaning they're not contributing to moving it...
