I prefer 14, ...but live with 18, or 17 or 17.5 ....or 16...because that whats for sale often, especially in the used market.
Every band I've been in though loves a deep kick. Size matters to these...

Re: New Bill Bruford Conversation

Thanks for these.
Bill Bruford is such a very pure musician and a really deep thinker about drums, music and musicians. His book is great, really funny.
Phil Collins - I listened to his interview...

Re: How do you feel during your drum lessons?

The fact you feel nervous shows you care, just go with it.
Always recall you paid for your lesson and so its kind of a service to you. You are the customer so try not to feel like the disadvantaged...

Re: How to trawl craigslist for deals

Exactly...the picture!
There is a lot of junk out there, but sometimes junk mixed with gems. I have no technique other than searching ads and pictures and yes you have to act right away.
My last...

Re: The jazz ride pattern

Art Blakey Moanin'
I don't play jazz at all but listening and playing along to this..over and over...helped me 'get' the quarter note pulse. I'd like to think it helped improve my ride cymbal...

Re: Is made in the US really that much better?

Same here, its allover CL and awfully cheap sometimes. A bass amp with 15 inch speaker for only $40. I know it gets a bad rap with pros. But every band I'm in, I ask other players what they think of...

Re: What are the stories behind famous drummers kits?

DED, nice pics man, you really delved deep in the past for those.
Funny how Sonny Greer's setup will be echoed later by many prog rock drummers (chimes etc) or by Bonham (timpani, gong). Appears he...

Re: What are the stories behind famous drummers kits?

Bill Bruford and Simon Kirke with Hayman drums. One doesn't hear of these made in England drums much, but chosen for a little while in early 70's by these guys to be loud and compete with...

Re: What are the stories behind famous drummers kits?

Bonham actually started with a Slingerland (13-16-24), because thats what his heroes Buddy and Krupa had. Switched to Ludwig the big thermogloss ala Carmine's influence. If you look closely modded to...

Re: Playing the drumset without sticks..

Ya I was going to say the same thing. I can get a semi decent sound from snare, but me hitting toms with hands sounds flat. I see in that clip Joe used the back of his hand too. I also find hitting...

Re: Ludwig 7 ply mahogany/poplar vs 3-ply mahogany with re-rings

Drastic - the 3 ply mahogany will be-warm, deep, resonant. I would pick this kit hands down.

Re: Anyone Heard the New Tama SLP Kapur Or Studio Maple Kit?

I like Kapur as a wood. Sounds great. Not sure why they went with the 'hyperdrive' tom sizes on these.

Re: Forum Utilization Down

More debate and contrarianism ( and less gear) might hold peoples attention. People are drawn to a healthy argument. New members could be good for stirring the pot that way by not knowing old members...
