Re: What is your main struggle?

Playing in time. Been drumming for more than 10 years, and I still cannot keep time :(

Re: Rock and roll....over?

Of course rap and hip hop is more predominant around the world. During the time it emerged into mainstream success, media was much more accessible to youth, as compared to the rock and roll...

+1 the above. I presume you must have reported it by now?

Re: MuseScore

Yes it's a good program for writing music considering it's free. I use it to write exercises for my students.

But some drum notation on this software can be quite difficult to write though.

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Some of my observations on the technical and realistic bits of the movie:

1) Your hands can't bleed that much from too much drumming (unless you cut yourself). I'll probably suffer from RSI first...

Re: Jazz Drum Solo Sheet Music for Beginners

You should also check out Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials. You can apply all the rudimental playing into the kit and play along with the tracks. All the songs are 3-5 minutes long, start to finish,...

Re: Please share me some of your wisdom 2 cents

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts.

I know that School C is the way to go. It's just that with the culture here (where business competition is fierce and people get grudges over the smallest...

Please share me some of your wisdom 2 cents

So I've been teaching in Music Centre A (by music centre I mean big music shops that offers lessons) on a part time basis for quite sometime now. While its good to be learning how to teach and have...

Re: 8 years of professional teaching - time to give it away

Hi Nutha Jason

Saw a few of your videos, and they are very informative. I especially like how you explain your breakdowns (you sure must have taught a lot of kids!), and recently teaching...

Re: It is technical or psychological?

+1 to the above.

It would help you a lot too if you invest on private lessons at this stage. I didn't had any formal one to one instructors for the first 5 years of playing, and I used to think...

Re: Yet another practice thread

By that I meant developing your skills as a musician. Rather than the technical side of things, you could be focusing on activities that would improve your sense of timing, pitch, musical forms,...

Re: Yet another practice thread

Very good suggestions from the last two posts. You can definitely work on your other senses of musicality, or anything related to or may inspire you.

On top of what others said, I was going to...

Re: Jazz and Matched Grip

Just like how many drummers are now using traditional grip to play metal, it doesn't really make any difference which grip you use to play a particular style of music, as long as you are comfortable....

Re: Traditional grip for rock?

I wouldn't say so. I started out playing matched for 2-3 years before switching 100% to traditional grip. I was playing everything(rock, jazz, metal, etc.) in traditional at that time before taking...

Re: Marching Corp Basics

Which part of Australia are you studying percussion in?

If you are in South Australia, you can find some drum corps material in the Elder Conservatorium library in U of Adelaide.

Not sure how...

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

Hmmm, 'mastering' a specific tempo. Something I've always wondered in the earlier drumming years, but after 2 years of intense tertiary level study, I just don't buy this tempo mastering thing.

I...

Re: How sentimental are you about your drums?

I remember when I bought my first drumkit in 2006, a Tama Stagestar, I was so attached to it that I was hoping I'd take it with me all the way untill I become pro. My bro also bought me a Dream ride...

Re: Using Left Foot Hi-Hat, Does It Help Improve Time?

+1 for Bermuda. I also rock my left heel to 8th notes when I'm playing guitar or just rocking out to tunes. It eventually becomes a habit - rocking out to eighths.

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

Apologies for the late response! I had an unexpected job interview for Friday, so I had to make a trip down to the big city for a few nights.

Unfortunately, despite all the tips I learned from...
