Re: What's your take on electronic drum sets?

I have a friend who KILLS it on electronic kits. Odd meters out the whazoo- he can tear up those big band songs on the Roland kit.

He can't play an acoustic kit at all. Whether it's mental or not,...

Re: What's your take on electronic drum sets?

Those are definitely points I hadn't considered. Also, drumming is really a different beast than a melodic instrument. Piano skills probably convert to keyboard better than rudiments to a tonal...

Re: What's your take on electronic drum sets?

In a broader sense, I find it interesting that drummers did not take to electronic drums the way guitarists and pianists took to the electrification of their instruments.
Drummers are very...

Re: Guitarist comment on drummers

SOME guitarists think the job of the drummer is nothing more than to make them sound good. I guess that is true in many contexts, but it's not the status quo.

Ever "jam" with a guitarist and they...

Re: What is your opinion of this Billy Cobham review?

I think he went overboard by calling the music "decadent." If you consider old men soloing too much "decadent," what do you think of KISS spitting fire, Prince humping his guitar, or any other forms...

Re: What is your opinion of this Billy Cobham review?

I sensed a little pre-judging against fusion. If he's young, I could see why.
His problem seems to be more with the musical form. If he's offended by flashy solos, he's at the wrong show.

What is your opinion of this Billy Cobham review?

This Washington Post blogger didn't like the show much..

This is not an invitation to criticize the author, just wondering what the take is on his comments of "indulgence" and BC being too loud.

Re: Producers killed instrumentalists

Thanks Bermuda, it's great to have the perspective of a pro.
I'm not really offended by this dynamic- I do find it interesting. I noticed as a kid reading "Modern Drummer" there was always...

Re: The Speed Obsession

Drummers seem the most focused on speed than any other instrument. Maybe guitar players admire speed, but usually to a lesser degree.

You ever hear a singer get excited about how fast another...

Re: Producers killed instrumentalists

My goal is to compose a drum solo that she would find interesting. It's a tall order, but I like a challenge. Mostly she finds my practice pad irritating. :)

Re: Producers killed instrumentalists

Great points in this thread, including this one.
Bruford admits that he was insanely lucky. They were handing out record deals to British musicians like candy around that time. (to think that the...

Producers killed instrumentalists

Something in Bill Bruford's book got me thinking- at some point in time, producers took over the art and business of music-making from instrumentalists.
Does anybody else get a little miffed by the...

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

I had that issue MD and remember that interview. He said he got threats when he came out about it. But I don't remember him saying he played every song on those albums.

Re: Songs that make you do a double-take when you sit to down to play them

The BEATLES!

I moonlight in a cover band and had to learn some of their songs.

"Here Comes the Sun"- fun little pop diddy, right? Nope- It's got pauses, it's got the 11/8 walkdown and lots of...

Re: Terry Bozzio: The Evolution of His "Giant Sculpture"

Going to see him in a couple of weeks in DC and looking very forward to it!

He seems to take his craft very seriously. In one interview he was talking about going to therapy and then figuring out...

Re: Looking for Jazz solos in 3/4 to transcribe

The only solo in 3/4 I am aware of is "The Drum Also Waltzes." But since you've been transcribing Roach, you've probably heard of that.

Bruford did a version of TDAW on the album "Flags."
Neil...

Re: Not doing a gig because of the venue

My one and only rule for venues:

I will never play anywhere that has a salad bar in the same room.

Re: Scott K Fish Blog: Regrets? I've Had a Few #2 Levon Helm

Wow- bummer! As you said you would have more chance of misquoting without a recording.
I've been in that situation- I usually write down the pithiest, most meaningful quotes and fill the rest with...

Re: Need forum wisdom (fusion "standards")

Man, could the drums on Hancock's "Chameleon" be any more 70s sounding? Dig it.

What's a good representative fusion song from Miles?

Re: Need forum wisdom (fusion "standards")

It's funny, when I do a search on bandmix.com for "fusion"-- it returns a bunch of drummer, but far fewer of other instruments.
Maybe drummers like fusion more than other instrumentalists, because...

I don't know much Dave Weckl band stuff, but I guess he has played with several of the guys I mentioned. Does Dave have a personal classic song?
I could never get into his solo records that much...

Re: Need forum wisdom (fusion "standards")

Good point, although I assume Jazz standards didn't start out that way. There seem to be certain Fusion classics.
Romantic Warrior is a good one.

Hewitt: Stratus and Red Baron are on my list.

Need forum wisdom (fusion "standards")

What would you consider the standard Fusion classics? I am working on a project. Artists I am thinking of would be:

Billy Cobham
Chick Corea
Miles Davis
Bill Connors
Bill Bruford
Mike Stern...

Re: Scott K Fish Blog: Regrets? I've Had a Few #1: Bill Bruford

I am sure that around that time you were not aware of the potential of electronics because it simply hadn't happened yet.

I hated Simmons at the time because drummers were just playing them like...

Re: Scott K Fish: Interviewing Advice from Buddy Rich

I haven't read his bio yet but it's at the top of my list when I get a chance. Been looking forward to that!
The old Bruford band might have been the geekiest collection of musicians ever, but they...
