Re: Why is jazz drumming still so dominant?

And again, I have no beef with that whatsoever. Remember I made the point that being dismissive of others' musical choices is not limited to jazz.

All I can say is that if offered the chance of...

Re: Why is jazz drumming still so dominant?

I have zero quibble with people being unavailable. We had a bass player injure his hands on the day of the gig, hence the need for an emergency stand in. I absolutely get that finding somebody at...

Re: Pre-planned drum fills??

In most genres, we don't expect the guitarists, the vocalist, the bass player, the strings, the horn section or the triangle player to come up with anything new when we play the song.

Why should...

Re: Drums In Ads/Commercials

The ad was for headache tablets.

Mom holds her head in pain as daughter plays drums.

Mom swallows quality pharmaceuticals, then looks on lovingly as daughter plays drums.

Drums In Ads/Commercials

Saw this in an ad on (Australian) TV.

Clearly nobody in the ad agency or on the set knew an actual drummer.

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Truth is, there is precious little in this entire thread that can be regarded as current trend.

I was responding to the notion that matched grip was a current trend.

Re: Why is jazz drumming still so dominant?

That kind of chauvinism isn't a jazz thing, I'm pretty sure.

I called somebody a little while back, to try and find an emergency bass player.

"Sorry, no I don't know anybody who'd be up to play...

Re: Pre-planned drum fills??

Most people WANT to hear what they are familiar with. If you are playing a reasonably faithful cover, that is what they want to hear. The vocalist sings the verses in the same order, with the same...

Re: Bo's last name

I pronounce it as a German name, so that it sort of rhymes with 'raider'.

This is the only correct method, and I suggest that everybody adopts this pronunciation.

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Traditional grip. Utter narcissistic wankery. It made sense when drummers were cannon fodder, and marching drums tilted away from the drummer but totally unnecessary with an adjustable snare stand.

Re: What should I do when the gains I've made from practicing have plateaued?

Everything I wanted to say, only better said and with the experience to back it up.

We're here to play music...if your technical ability is up to the music you are playing, then work on all the...

Re: Top Musicians vs Average Musicians

Was I the only one to be surprised to see Guns n Roses and Depeche Mode in the list, and ahead of the Stones, at that?

Re: Beginner question...how to play a 4 piece on sheet music written for a 5 piece?

It took me a while to understand, but I think that what Alex was suggesting was using the ride as an object to hit instead of a second tom, to practice the mechanics of having a second tom.

That...

Re: Mapex Saturn V on offer I'm really tempted. Saturn owners assemble!

I have a Saturn 5 kit (22/10/12/16), and could not be happier.

Haven't looked at another woman, wait, sorry, kit, since getting the Saturns 2 years ago.

If you don't mind losing drum related...

Re: New drummer needs help!

The difference is that the basic musical staff caters for a single octave, and guitar and piano cover multiple octaves, which means that it is necessary to add lines above and below the staff (when...

Re: Anyone just play drums for themselves only?

Music is like sex. Sure, you can do it on your own, and if it feels good then it is good. But it's way more fun if other people are involved. Also, subject to local laws, nobody else's opinion of...

Re: Rick Beato -- Is the man!

And I have no idea who Tool are, ditto some of the other acts that are revered on here.

You and I both have areas of musical ignorance, and that's just fine.

Not sure why you would choose to...
