Re: Anyone else notice the cost of sticks getting ridiculous

Last year Music123 had a sale for Vic Firth Rock sticks at $3.50 a pair or something, so I bought two pair. Last fall GC had black VF 5As and 5Bs on sale for $5 a pair, so I bought 6 pair of each....

Re: Some Pearl Vision Porn ;)

For the record, I never said Pearl doesn't make good-sounding drums.

Just ugly drums. With butt-ugly hardware.

Re: Billy Cobham in Hollywood tonight!

And I think he's living vicariously through you, so is this a vicarious loop?

Re: Any idea what brand this is?

Basix is a European drum brand, so far as I can tell. Most of their product here in the US appears to be lower-end beginner kits, but they have some birch and bubinga kits in their lineup too. I...

Re: How are drums recorded for a song?

^This. It's also not uncommon for a guitarist, bassist, or keyboard player to play along without being recorded to help the drummer find his/her way through the arrangement.

Re: Should I convert 14" and 16" toms to floor toms?

Do it. IMO, the very slight bit of lost resonance will be more than outweighed by the ability to put those things wherever you want without concern for having a stand near them. Never buying mounted...

Re: Ludwig Copper Phonic

Ffffft. World tours. Talk about first world problems!

I am seriously coveting a Copper Phonic now, though, in all seriousness. Beautiful looking drums, and apparently really great sounding.

Re: Can you read sheet music?

I grew up on wind instruments, then picked up bass guitar for jazz band, then finally drums. So reading music has been part of the equation since before I picked up sticks.

Do I use it all the...

Re: Porting a cajon

Interesting question. I have never played a cajon that was not ported. It allows the air moving off the tapa (front face) to escape, avoiding a "choked" sound.

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Hi Gavin, congrats on all the positive press for the new disc.

On your Facebook page you posted a photo with copies of the disc on your set. In the photo you've got Kerope hi-hats and a K Custom...

Re: Help with trying to soundproof shop building

Also, you will have to have a door inside a door. By the time you finish building in the needed mass in a building this size, how much room will really be left for you and your drums in this shed......

Re: Ludwig Snare Find....worth anything?

Everything about this screams "not quite right". The badge is way lower than a typical Ludwig B/O badge, which would have the word "Ludwig" centered on the shell, not the grommet. The snare throwoff...

Re: How do you count while olaying drums?

As you learn a time signature or a new piece of music, it's common to count until you learn the rhythmic structure. Then it becomes ingrained. It just takes practice.

Very few people need to...

Re: The 2015 funky Guru snare competition starts now! Entry details :)

Showed my wife my clip and yours. She said, "That's how you should have played it!" Again, nice job!

Re: The 2015 funky Guru snare competition starts now! Entry details :)

When I did it, I had made the dubious decision to not listen to the original, so as to challenge myself to figure out how to work it. You may notice that I chose to simply turn those parts around...

Re: The 2015 funky Guru snare competition starts now! Entry details :)

If you look back to the pic with the congas I posted you can see how they're... umm, kind of outsized. The video is shot all head-on and you might not see them as clearly.

Niiiiice, Billy Ray!

Re: The 2015 funky Guru snare competition starts now! Entry details :)

16" hi-hats = check :D

True to my word, I waited until after finishing my takes before listening to any of the previous versions of the song... including the actual track on the album. Some...

Re: The 2015 funky Guru snare competition starts now! Entry details :)

My video is shot and done. Adobe Premiere Pro CC must be using gold-tipped lasers to render the frames, as we have hours to go before we can watch it. But I'm pleasantly surprised at how the track,...

Re: Loud drums

I agree with Bermuda. Certain drums, with certain heads and tunings, have sonic properties that cut more. They project higher frequencies better, they have more ring and overtones, and so they have a...

Re: Finally got me an Acrolite !!

The Supra may be the iconic snare on all the records, but the Acro is the snare that everyone seems to own at one time or another. There's literally millions of them floating around thanks to school...

Re: How hard is it to start playing well?

I've been playing nigh-on thirty years (!) and I find I'm still learning what I need to learn.

It's a journey, not a destination.

Your motivation and ability to practice will make a big...

Re: Wraith vs Sledgehammer

Unless you're looking at a completely different Sledgehammer than the one I own, it's a very subdued brassy color, like fine metalworking. I don't think it is too terribly out of place with either of...
