Re: Deep bass drums

I'm the other way around - I feel like I have to work much harder to get the air pushing through an 18". I've played 14" deep and 16" deep for most of my life, and an 18" just feels sluggish to me....

Re: Next musical: "Little Shop Of Horrors"

Haven't posted much in this thread lately, so an update:

Last week had four rehearsals - the sitzprobe (where the actors sing along with the band for the first time, no rehearsals of lines outside...

Re: Pearl brass Sensitone video!

Nice video, and congrats on another great snare acquisition. I have never warmed to Pearl kits - they never excited me in any way - but I have to say, their Sensitone and Modern Utility lines are...

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

I'm intrigued by INDe Drums and would jump at the chance to try a set. I'm also curious about the playing experience with Oriollo's metal kits and A&F Drum Co.

Rediscovering your "other" gear

Ever since I rehabbed a set of Ludwig Standards (about 5 years ago), they've been my primary kit - recording, gigs, goofing around, you name it. For the most part, my other drums (first-gen Yamaha...

Re: What is your Go To gigging Snare Drum ?

My 6.5x14" Joey Kramer edition Black Magic has been my #1 snare since I got it. Recent purchases yet to arrive may push it down the list, though.

Re: How to trawl craigslist for deals

Reminds me of how I found that A Zildjian & Cie Constantinople in the local pawn shop for $60 behind a pile of ZBTs. Sold it for $150 some months ago. Some folks just don't know how to internet.

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Yep, the 13" dark walnut. I fell in love with the walnut sound on the honest capture videos and asked for a 7x14". Andy said he only had a 13" left, but it was his preference between the two. I also...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

This guy says his drums are pretty neat, and I could have this one if I wired him a bunch of money. I know it's the internet and everyone's very mean and sneaky, but he has a trusting face and says...

Re: Metal drumming, help me choose between theses 3 sets

At that budget, you've got a plethora of very good choices, all of which can pretty much do whatever you ask of them. I think your biggest questions should be whether you can get all five drums in...

Re: How to trawl craigslist for deals

I usually use "drum" because it's much harder to misspell that word. Seattle is a great big used market, too, and that takes me down to a couple hundred listings instead of several thousand.

I...

Re: PDP Mainstage Kit, Decent Quality??

As everyone has previously said, welcome to Drummerworld.

Almost every major drum manufacturer has some version of the Mainstage - basically a very inexpensive, overseas-mass-produced drumset that...

Re: Next musical: "Little Shop Of Horrors"

So we're loaded in and in the space. The band is set up adjacent to the stage in a large area off stage left, with TV monitors for the stage. Shortly there will be a short wall built between the band...

Re: Turning Points?

Figured as much -- and absolutely not surprised he still sounded like him. That's the mark of a pro right there!

Re: Turning Points?

Insane. I'm jealous - hard to top that seat!

Complete aside, I can't help but notice some of the composite lug Stage Custom Advantage drums in that setup...

Re: If you could decide for your favorite manfacturer's standard sizes?

I love my 14x22" kick and would definitely gravitate towards manufacturers that offer shallower kicks off the shelf - same with toms.

Re: Putting band name on kick drum head, with multiple bands?

If you have a smooth white or black head, you can get clear or white matte inkjet labels, print the band name/logo on them, and then peel and replace as necessary. (Using them with a coated head is...

Re: Playing the drumset without sticks..

I've been doing a lot of hand drumming on the snare with the snares off lately, looking for different sounds and textures - using my nails, the backs of my fingers, the heel of my hand. It's a very...

Re: What's your favorite cover (maybe limit to 2-3 songs) that your band plays right now?

We've done "Sultans of Swing" for a year now and it often gets a good reaction. Dire Straits have some great songs.

Re: What's your favorite cover (maybe limit to 2-3 songs) that your band plays right now?

I love playing La Grange, it always gets a great reaction because every recognizes it even if they don't know it's by ZZ Top.

We do "Play That Funky Music" usually late in the set when people...

Re: Got stage names?

In one band I made the mistake of telling the rest of the guys about a workplace experience where, for some reason, a visiting VIP decided to call me "Tony". Until I left that band, my stage name was...

Re: What is the cleverest instruction given to you by a music director?

One of my earliest theater gigs was an original musical, called "The Borrowers." It was based on the children's book series, and the whole thing was pretty rated G. However, at one point the villain...

Re: What is the most unintelligible instruction given to you by a music director?

My favorite recurring direction is usually "Don't do it like that."

To which I usually respond, "Well, what would you like then?" and fully knowing the answer will be, "I don't know, just not...
