Re: Josh Freese Drum Setup?

Unless I'm mistaken, this is from a few years back, and his setup then had nothing to do with tom placement. He had broken his right foot (or leg) for a tour, so he had to play with his kick mainly...

Re: Ok, do your worst ;)

I love the realisation on your face; it seems you've never once thought about the fact that you lead that triplet with your left hand.

And yeah, it really is not that easy to do. Granted, my left...

Re: PSA - Lubricate your P85.

I guess I should have prefaced my post by saying I'm not an expert, but I've seen so many warnings about using WD40 as a lubricant that I felt I at least needed to make a comment about it not being...

Re: PSA - Lubricate your P85.

WD40 is not a lubricant, it's a solvent. It might lubricate something for a short while, but once it dries out you risk it getting even worse because it dissolves whatever lube was there to begin...

Re: Drumming without shoes - caution

Had a rehearsal on a hot day, so I was wearing flip-flops that day. No spare shoes at the rehearsal studio, so I had to play barefoot.

Long story short, it seems there's a screw on my pedals that...

Re: Hahahahahahahaha :)

Before zooming out and actually showing the drummer, I was sure that someone had just thrown together a more or less random track in some drum software and put it on top of that poor girl's...

Re: Help - how it is played

The start of the song is all toms, as far as I can hear. Not sure what percussive sound you're referring to.

The kick drum enters at around two minutes, and then snare and cymbals at around 3...

Re: More amazing Simon - "most farmer's wives in Bulgaria dance in 9/8"!

Not quite true. He used to have three floor toms, but in that video he only has one, with the other two mounted as rack toms up higher.

Not a huge change, but pretty noticable since it happens so...

Re: More amazing Simon - "most farmer's wives in Bulgaria dance in 9/8"!

I love his approach! Like I said in the other thread, I really dislike complexity for complexity's sake, but on the flipside of that I love when complexity is hidden behind deceptive simplicity.

Re: Amazing (old) studio footage - Simon Phillips with The Coors :)

Simon is almost disgustingly good. Absolutely second to none!

Re: How Far for a Paid Gig will you travel?

I spend at least an hour and a half just getting home from band rehearsals. An hour's drive is a joke :-)

Re: How many bpms can you cat play?

Since we're posting cat pics now, here's mine. The useless little bastard can't play any instruments at all, I'm so disappointed.

Re: Two and four groovy or... Not?

This, pretty much.

"Groove" is not an objective term though, so you might have a hard time feeling it when it comes to more backbeat-focused drumming. I often have trouble finding it in jazzy...

Re: Songs that make you do a double-take when you sit to down to play them

I had a go at Love Bites by Halestorm just for fun a while back, but I didn't realise just how fast that song is until I tried to play it. After struggling to keep the energy up, I checked it with my...

Re: Poll: do you double bass?

#3, I guess. I've got a double pedal, and I use it for quick accents or fills, but not really anything more than that.

Re: Health of Dennis Chambers

Yeah, the ongoing discussion is in another thread:

Doesn't seem to be any updates for a few days now, hopefully he's still doing better.

Re: What drummers have marched?

I know Ray Luzier played snare in a marching band, but I can't think of any others that I know of.

I played in a marching band for many years in my youth, but I played the baritone horn :-)

Re: Ongoing hi hat problem

First thing that came to my mind is that he has a drop clutch and doesn't realise it. But I'm most likely wrong.

Re: Why is it you never see threads saying....

Part of it might be that people who ask about whether or not to get a certain kit will generally be guys who are making the leap from a starter kit to an intermediate (or even pro) one.

Re: Spent about 45 min playing a Cajon today

Yeah man, cajons can hurt! I had the same problem when rehearsing with a cajon for an unplugged show we did a few months back. I ended up in so much pain and with so many bruises that I bought myself...

Re: Can't figure out this bass drum pattern

Yup, a pretty standard punk beat, the kick is played on 1 and on the & of 2 and the & of 4. The tempo and style means that it's probably not played with absolute metronomic accuracy, which can give...

Re: Thoughs on Mapex?

I play a Mapex Saturn. I love it. Is it somehow objectively better than other brands? Probably not.
