Mic'n: Rock/Pop vs Jazz

Will you mic a kit for jazz differently than a kit for rock/pop?

I'm asking because in rock/pop, the kick and snare dominate. Not so in jazz.

Re: Do you record yourself daily when practicing?

Question to you all:

Recording and listening back to the audios is straightforward and I do this from time to time.

But, how do you streamline the viewing of the videos to check your posture...

Re: Recording drums and music through a zoom q3hd using Roland TD-6V

You misread the labels on your module. In the very first photo you posted, ignore the top row of text. Read the 2nd row: "phone" and "mix in". (The "MIDI IN" and "MIDI OUT/THRU" are referring the 2...

Re: Problem with an off-beat groove

Hi Brian,

Sorry that I didn't explain it clearly.

I don't have problem to play syncopated kicks or place the kicks on the off-beats. I can play this perfect to a metronome. My problem is with...

Re: Problem with an off-beat groove

Thanks Larry.

I meant the guitar groove is off-beat. That makes it hard for me to feel where the downbeats are...

Problem with an off-beat groove

I've been practicing this Trinity College grade 3 exam piece for months. But there is this off-beat groove that I couldn't get the drums to lock in. Here is a vid I found on youtube:

Opinions needed on recording technique/equipment in my garage (with audio files)

Hi all,

I'm green in home recording. I used to just use a Zoom Q3HD to record my own practice. I've recently acquired a pair of AKG P170 mics (as part of their Groove Pack). I'm trying out a mic...

Re: Yamaha Stage Custom $899 vs Shell pack $650

Slightly off topic.

I don't understand why Stage Custom comes with single-braced hardware while GigMaker double-braced hardware. At least in Australia.

Re: Hi-Hat Stepping (Lift & Close on every beat)

It took me years to be comfortable to play constant HH quarter notes with the foot.

Re: Intros and fills....argh!!!!

You are not alone. I reckon it's a left-brain/right-brain thing.

When I'm sitting in front of a kit and wanting to come up with some phrases, my mind usually goes blank. But if I'm just listening...

Re: Snare: Replacing Yamaha Birch SC Snare with Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Snare?

I spent my entire Saturday tweaking the kit. (Suffice to say, that drove my wife nuts.)

I now can get a half-decent sound from the snare by itself. Now I know the batter head needs to tune high on...

Re: Snare: Replacing Yamaha Birch SC Snare with Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Snare?
