I took the my extra 20" bass and turned it into a gong drum. I used steel cable and ran it in and out through my tom mount holes. Then I hung the cable from the rafters in my garage. It hangs...

I've been trying to decide that for many, many years............they both have their perks. I think mainly I get burned out on the same sound and when I switch to a different drum.........the "new"...

It sounds like you're trying to put the snare wires on at full tightness............follow the advice given and you should be fine. It's definately a one man job.............you'll get it down soon.

Out of curiosity from reading this thread...........I moved my 13" and 14" so that they lay as flat (horizontal) as possible without causing me to change my technique. They were at about a 45 degree...

Good advice.............before I read your post I was gonna say something about head damage with too much angle and improper tip contact for pure sound.

If the bearing edges are still good.............buy it. You may want to remove a head....say on the floor tom........and check at least one drum for bearing edge damage. But really.........buy...

I wouldn't do that.............if you want a vented snare then buy it...............I would think that drilling that mahogany would be detrimental to the sound.
