Re: Keeping time when no one else is...

I have a similar issue with a bass player who is always playing behind the beat and not in the pocket. Its like a constant drag.. The 2 guitar players have good time.. And last gig I found if I...

Re: DRUM Cymbals purchase.. HELP required !!!

Yes.. the China cymbal is a bit of a nice to have, but a good ride will be more useful. I never carry Chinas anymore as I just don't use them that often.. and at the end of the night it's like 'I...

Re: I can't hear my bass drum when playing live

Sounds like a monitoring issue to me.. even with a small kick; if it's mic'd properly and you have a monitor pointing at you - and a sound guy that adjusts the levels for you .. you should hear it...

Re: More Shuffle Independence

Yes.. I like Jim Chapins description too! it's kind of like a light pull out stroke and then the on-the-beat stroke is like pulling away like you touched a stove. It's one way to get some 'power'...

Re: More Shuffle Independence

I love this stuff.. I'm a bit of a shuffle demon myself. Jim Chapin describes the pull out strokes (the ghosted notes before the beat) as ' touching you finger to a hot stove'. When I first got into...

Re: Serious timing issue

Wow.. yes.. that ain't right! I love live TV.. it does sound like something on autopilot but it somehow managed to get into place later on in the song. I liked the smirk on Harry Conicks face when he...

Re: New Premier XPK.

If this helps.. my favorite kits are my Yamaha recording customs (1985) and my Premier XPK (1990). Both sound awesome.. but I'd give an edge to the RC's for hardware and ease of use when setting up...

Re: Snare drum advice please

I have seen a guy busking doing what you describe.. although he had a slighlty different setup.. basically a small kick drum with 2 pedals and one of the pedals was hitting a small snare. He played...

Re: Snare drum advice please

I would go wood snare.. Warmer tone than what you will get with a rocket metal snare. I picked up a maple pro panther deluxe ( i forgot the official name) for about 125 on Kajiji..normally a 450-500...

Re: Cleaning Rusty Chrome with Water and Foil

Haven't tried any of those methods.. but I did have a problem once with a DYnasonic that I had to leave in a warehouse next to a plastics shop.. and a combination of dust and dampness from a concrete...

Re: Micing my kit with 3 mics

Cool.. interesting version where the the OH is down low pointed at the hihat and one OH up high over the toms. No phase issues.. might give that a try sometime..

One thing I've found when doing...

Re: Micing my kit with 3 mics

Great info here. It got me thinkin..There is a distinction here between recording and micing for live playing.. you have to be careful in live situations regarding spillage and OHs picking up other...

Re: Two-handed 16th rhythms on the hats.....

I love playing funky grooves where it's too fast to play comfortably with one hand on the hats and it sounds too sparse if you just play 8ths on the hats.. add in 16ths with both hands and - at the...

Re: Does your inner metronome ruin your appreciation of music?

The 'inner metronome' never ruins my appreciation of music because..
- I'm too busy enjoying the music!
I have the best playing experiences when I'm totally into the music.. not counting bars or...

Re: The problem with Jazz

I'm not a true jazz guy, but have played in a number of jazz bands, big bands, swing bands fusion etc... and I appreciate a lot of jazz - but like any style of music there's some bands/musicians that...

Re: Do drummers lose points for disassembling the moment the show is done?

I rarely share the stage but if I have to.. it's just common sense to make the transition to the next band quick and painless. Otherwise as a solo act, at the end of the night you don't want to...

Re: Traditional grip with wedding ring

My ring used to bug me when I played using matched grip.. but I found a solution;
- go to Orlando Universal Studios and take a ride on the 'Magic Teacup' water ride. (can't remember what it was...

Re: Disco beat - hihat technique

LoL.. that's hilarious! I don't remember that too well.. but a lot of interesting things in there I'd never heard of.. like I'd never heard disco as being a 'gay' thing.
In my day most people just...

Re: Disco beat - hihat technique

LoL.. did you ever hear the expression "Disco SUCKs!". It was very popular during the demise of disco. To be honest I got extremely sick of hearing anything with a chirping hihat for 10 or more years...

Re: Disco beat - hihat technique

Heels up on the hat slighlty worksforme.. I use both heel up and down for different situations.. But for the chirping thing heels up. Also as its such a simple beat make sure you finesse the chirp.....

Re: Bruno Mars vs Jstin Bieber: who is the better drummer?

JB is like an intermediate level player .. but Bruno surprized me! I didn't even know he played drums - well he does - and he's a killer drummer!

JB should be deported but not here! Send him and...

Re: Playing drums dynamically

I agree there are different types of dynamics; those between your limbs, how your levels blend in with the band, the level of detail (busy or simple) etc. I also think of dynamic layers in a tune.. ...
