Re: Clave

I agree, calling it clave is wrong, and calling it 3-2 is wrong. I've heard American amateur batucada people refer to Brazilian rhythms generally as "clave", especially with regard to being on the...

Re: Ted Reed's Syncopation

Cool stuff, Arnaud-- do you have those interpretations written out, and available on line?

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

Why not $6k every year? I would get started on a fresh budget-- get on Craigslist right now, and look at shared housing (like a room, or a shared room in a house or apartment) in the neighborhood...

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

I didn't know that-- that's too bad. I don't know if work study means what I think it means for this purpose-- for me it meant the school gave me a job of sitting behind the desk at the practice...

Re: Clave

Assuming we're talking about the same thing-- Son clave in Cuban music, and the 'bossa' rhythm in Brazilian music: the two rhythms are exactly the same, except with the Brazilian rhythm the second...

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

For me this is a little like asking "What's more important, realizing your dream or staying off heroin?" Like, one does not necessarily follow from the other, and debt/heroin addiction itself can be...

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

Hmm, it seems like you should be able to get by for less than 13k for ~9 months of school. You should be sharing a bedroom in a house with a half dozen other people-- I don't know what that costs...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

I somehow ended up with a 90's Pearl 12x7" snare drum-- the seller listed the size wrong. I don't dig ridiculously high-pitched snare drums (http://shipdrummer.blogspot.com/2014/03/too-high.html),...

Re: Practice advice for professional musician switching to drums

Get playing with people as soon as you can-- if you can play a basic groove in a variety of tempos without falling over, you're ready to do that. Do it as much as possible.

For books, you could...

Re: Name famous songs where the drummer overplays

I'm talking about the playing habits, not the video.

The question at hand is not "is this guy having fun and showing off." I mean, the answer there is definitely yes. We're talking about...

Re: Songs with fast / tricky single bass drum patterns

Yes! Here's the groove written out (http://shipdrummer.blogspot.com/2013/08/groove-and-totally-gratuitous-lick-of.html).

Re: Name famous songs where the drummer overplays

All of the girlish baton-twirling moves certainly engage my brain. Everything you like about this video are things this kid is going to have to overcome if he ever wants to succeed professionally in...

Re: Anyone Good With Time Signatures?

Cool, great! You had it though-- it's just a 5/8 with a long beat 5.

Re: Anyone Good With Time Signatures?

Actually it's 7/8 + 7/8 + 11/16. The 11/16 breaks down to 4/8+3/16.

Re: Name famous songs where the drummer overplays

Great examples-- maybe we need to reclaim the word to be more value-neutral, because lifting the music by playing more than would normally be considered tasteful is definitely a real thing.

I...

Re: Preparing for 1st semester in jazz studies

Great, that's a good school. Mainly I'd be getting ready for big band and combo auditions-- so, polishing my styles (swing in a range of tempos, waltz, bossa, samba, generic latin, afro 6, ballad,...

Re: when is the right time to move on to the next exercise?

It depends on what the thing is, and how long you've been doing it. For something brand new, or for a technical exercise, just play it until you can do it repetitively, comfortably, without mistakes,...

Re: Argument with Guitarist over time signature

Well, I'm a professional, and I'm having a hard time understanding what you're even talking about, so I would say you're feckin' wrong.

Calling that rhythm "8th note triplets" actually...

Re: Jazz: Following the form questions

You don't sing it, you hear it-- you know the tune well enough that you don't have to actively keep track of it. You also have to know the standard forms well enough that you can know where you are...

Re: Will anyone ever write another 'classic'

The songs are being written every day-- there's no shortage of writing talent. The question is more whether a new song that's-- good enough? substantive enough?-- to have a life beyond its original...

More great stuff. Saw your piece in MD this month, too-- congratulations on that!
