Re: Pitch and percussion

I've seen some wacky jazz dudes press their elbow into a tom to alter the pitch. That was interesting, though not especially great sounding, IMO.

Re: tips on posture

I've always heard that you are supposed to keep your legs parallel (or nearly parallel) to the floor and your knees at an angle greater or equal to 90 degrees (in other words, your knee should not be...

Re: Why Do I Hide the Chops Around Others

I used to date a ballet dancer who told me that for every spin you want to do on stage, you have to be able to do a triple in practice. I find it's the same with drumming. When performing, you tend...

Re: My first show

Stick mainly to rhythms and fills that you are comfortable with. Don't try to get too fancy. At every gig I've played so far (not many yet), people have come up to me and told me how awesome I was....

Re: Your favorite drummer's best work

Stanton on All Kooked Out. IMO, still stands as one of the best examples of creative New Orleans funk drumming.

Don't forget about Astral Project too. John Vidacovic's jazz band. Absolutely amazing.

Wow. That's pretty badass. I think you know you rock when you can make a cell phone ring funky.

Re: Reggae Drumming

Ditto on the Tommy Igoe suggestion. That's how I learned reggae.

Ditto also on how hard it is at first to not hit the bass drum on the one after a fill. Feels really empty at first, but once you...

Re: Drum Mics

Anyone have strong feelings one way or the other about mic stands vs clips? Can you get as good sound with clips? If so, they seem like they'd be much more convenient, especially for live use.

Re: Playing my first gig...need advice

Hey guys. It was cool reading this thread, because my first gig as a drummer is tomorrow night. Hope it goes as well as Mr. B's. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Re: Mental Drumming?

I find it's better for working out coordination than for chops.I used to work on Stanton Moore beats during class. People who sat in my row finally started asking me to stop because I was shaking the...

Re: DRUM INSTRUCTION DVD & BOOK REVIEWS

Yeah, they're pretty similar. Both cover basic beats and techniques. Different teaching styles, but if you learn the info from one, you probably wouldn't get too much from the other.

Re: Electronic Drums in Apartment

My brother has electronic drums in an apartment, and he plays until 10-ish, and hasn't had any complaints. He's not sure anyone's living underneath him, though.

Hey thanks. I swear I did. I must've used slightly different words, like snare buzz or snare noise, because I definitely find those now when I search for snare ringing. Guess its just one of those...

ringing snare

So, all of a sudden my snare is having this horrible overtone ringing sound whenever i hit it. Since it hasn't always done this, I'm assuming its a tuning problem, but have no idea how to fix it....

Here's a few that no one's mentioned that I love playing with:

Most of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I especially dig Funky Monks.

Re: the half time or purdy shuffle

It's on the swing beat right before the 2, right? Like the third note of the triplet of the first beat of the measure.

Re: the half time or purdy shuffle

Thanks Jookbox, that really helps. For some reason, its a lot easier to pick out exactly where each beat falls. I'll have to try doing that myself.

Re: the half time or purdy shuffle

Thanks so much you guys. I've learned a lot by reading this discussion.

I think I've got the Purdie shuffle down now, but I'm not sure if I'm picking up the Fool in the Rain and Rosanna shuffles...
