Re: Help with plastic souding Tama Superstar Hyperdrive, PLEASE

Age is not a factor. "Stock" heads simply suck. At least change your batters first. Resos can follow.

Re: Help with plastic souding Tama Superstar Hyperdrive, PLEASE

1) Is your idea of "lower more drum like sound" what you hear in records? If so, then it is very different from the drivers seat. Mics (whether close or far) hear things very differently than your...

Re: Will anyone ever write another 'classic'

The last wedding I went to was of a cousin who is in his 30s, and we danced to a lot of 90s music.

Re: early 70's Pearl? what else?

I have a mid 70s Pearl kit, and Ive seen 70s catalogs. I've never seen these lugs. They could have been replaced, like I did when they started breaking.

Opinions on this kit please

Here I go again. This guy's been selling it for over a year. I don't need it, but I'm tempted. Looks like its from the late 70s. It's equivalent to about US$ 888. Is this a good buy?

Re: How to make my kick sound less boomy without using muffling?

In my experience, cloth/felt strips are better at controlling boom than emads. They usually run almost through the middle of the head, which can cut out more sustain than an EMAD which is only around...

Re: Horrid Snare Ring On Outer Edge

1) Your tuning is too low.

2) Snares really ring when you hit close to the rim.

Re: Can a cheap set be upgraded?

1. Its cool that your band bought you a kit. For rehearsals and small gigs, you can get by with cheap toms and a kick. The only upgrade would be better heads. Start with the batters. Oh, and for the...

Re: Big Band Rock, what happened?

You've got it backwards. In my country, LOTS of kids play rock because they want to. Unfortunately, many clubs won't give them gigs if there are too many in a band. But that doesn't stop them from...

Re: 16 bar blues v 12 bar blues

Midnite Zephyr is right. A simple form of 12 bar blues is 12 measures long, 4/4 time signature, I - IV - V (in this case: C7 - F7 - G7) chord progression. Like this:

Re: Disco beat - hihat technique

Its most evident in cut 6 "Earth Juice" (20:55), but Lennie White has the "disco" hihat subtly scattered all over this album. Elsewhere his kick and snare can get very busy at times, so it doesn't...

Re: Big Band Rock, what happened?

Large ensembles have always been problematic because there are more people to pay. Even marquee jazz big bands have expanded and contracted through the 40s to the 60s depending on economics. There...

Re: How do you characterize the sound of steel?

Wild. Ringy. Crazy. Fun.

I have a 70s Pearl 4515 10-lug steel snare, with coated ambassador, ambassador snare, and generic 42-strands. All of the above adjectives apply.

If you need/want to buy new, I'd chose this for the same money

Re: How to beat superior drummer

Sorry if this is OT.

I'm not sure how vinyl is making people focus more on music. I've observed from audiophile forum posts that many people buying vinyl are doing so because of the unique sound...

Re: How to beat superior drummer

I agree with JosephDAqui. Learn drum programming and electronic percussion. Lay it down at home, then just export everything to the studio. And if there is money left over, you can even overdub...

Re: Proof other musicians don't care how drums sound.

Judging by how many badly setup kits I've played, I think a lot of DRUMMERS don't care how their drums sound.

Re: What beat of a measure do you adjust yourself on?

Seriously, in some cases the place of a measure where I camp out depends on other elements of the music. These would include the cadence and/or phrasing of the melodies, and the chord changes. For...

Re: Anyone seen "white rust" inside their drums?

I remember a thread recently with the OP from Malaysia noticing a similar thing, but disagreeing it was white rust.

Re: How do i muffle my bass drum?

Or you could cut up an old pair of pyjamas or any scrap fabric lying around the house that's long enough to run across the drum.

Re: To mention or not to mention?

I'm with a few others here that, hypothetically its the call of the minister of music/musical director/worship leader, when it comes to musical matters.

On the other hand, membership in a Church...
