Re: Sacrificing sound

Totally depends on the music I think. I tend to throw myself right into gigs, often at the expense of accuracy. I had a gig just this Thursday night of which I can remember at least one major error...

Re: Felt sound control on bass drums . . .

I always have, and always will, use felt strips on the reso. The width just gets bigger with the size of the drum. No laundry in my kicks thankyouverymuch!

But then, I still use my wallet on the...

Re: Anyone use multiple rides?

I have 3 cymbals (excluding hats) on my kit. an 18, a 20 and a 22. I ride and crash all of them because in my eyes there is no difference between a 'ride' or a 'crash' - they are just cymbals with...

Buying New vs Buying Used - A Moral Dilemma?

A comment over in another part of this forum got me thinking yesterday and I thought I'd offer out the idea to see what the DW community thought about it when posed with a question of ethics over...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz, the new Acrolite?

My backup kit is Catalina shells and I think they sound great!

Definitely underrated / much maligned by the drum corksniffers.

Re: So how do you mic an un-ported bass drum?

It's definitely worth considering. I'm not precious about my (inexpensive) shells, so drilling for the XLR socket wasn't much bother. It took a little while of fiddling to get the Mic placement right...

Re: So how do you mic an un-ported bass drum?

I just installed an internal mic on my unported kicks, and had an XLR socket in the side. Just rock up and plug a cable in!

all the sound guys that have dealt with it have loved it :)

12" Wood Hoop Options? Buying a gift...

A good friend of mines birthday is coming up and I took note in an old conversation that he wanted to try wood hoops on his 12" snare. Now, he never has any money so I thought I'd maybe treat him to...

Re: How Often Do You Alter Your Configuration?

I change a bit... but seeing as I only use snare, kick and floor tom, it's only ever cymbals that get shifted. At the moment I am using 1 crash and 2 rides but it has shifted everywhere from just one...

Re: Drummers are athletes

Yeh, I heard that about the heart rate somewhere before, makes sense. I tend to only have 1 beer before a show and not again - primarily as I always have to drive back at the end of the night! I...

Re: Drummers are athletes

You need to play harder!

Honestly, after a 45 minute set of drumming live my body almost shuts down! - and I'm not exactly unfit - but then, I drum extremely cathartically and I put EVERYTHING...

Re: Best way to sell cymbals that have never been used?

If I'm honest, I'd probably list them as new - or 'new old stock'

A lot of cymbals in music shops have probably seen more than half an hour's play and they don't sell them as used! If they don't...

Re: Ludwig Black Beauty

I would recommend going smooth - ONLY because you can dry out a ringy snare with heads/muffling but you cant add resonance to a dry hammered shell.

As for depth, that's tough. I prefer shallower...

Re: Who's rockin' Hayman drums?

You see a few for sale on eBay UK now and again... and they go for relatively low figures. I've played a some and very much enjoyed them. I keep meaning to pick up a set as they have a nice look...

Re: I just can't tune a floor tom :-(

Firstly, it would help to know what size it is and, more importantly, what heads you're using!

Are you trying to get that real low THUD out of it or a solid note?
Normally if the head is...

Re: Anybody have that 'magic touch'?

I play pretty hard but I've only ever broken sticks when I tried going down to 7a sticks. Never broken a 5a that was a decent make (promark oak for me)...just worn them out. Never ever broke a...

Re: strange problem with leaning pedals!!!

I had the same with an iron cobra...never did work out why but a piece of fabric over the hoop before I put the pedal on seemed to cure it. Not that I kept them long - couldn't come close to a...

Re: DIY Cymbal "Jingle Hat" project...

Wow, thank you man! That song is only about a week old so far from polished as well! Laura has a very personal style on her guitar and it counters mine and the bassists more noisy moments hahaha.

Re: DIY Cymbal "Jingle Hat" project...

Thanks man. Looking at it now, if I wanted to I could make it out of a nice piece of leather which would lighten it up even more. It's quite subtle on the hats themselves but you notice it more when...

Re: Hardcore Drumming 101

You (I mean the royal you by the way - in the collective) cannot call that Hardcore.
As has already been stated, Hardcore was an 80s/90s punk movement, mainly from the DC area, and included many...

Re: Drum Finishes - A Natural Debate - Part Deux

I tend to not like being able to see the wood grain! Same with my guitars.
Favourite finishes are all wraps and are as follows:

Black
Red Sparkle
WMP
Sky Blue Pearl
Ludwig Bowling Ball (blue...

Re: Ridiculously oversized kits

^---THIS!

Having worked as a sound engineer, there is NOTHING worse than someone taking too long to set up/tear down. It's extremely disrespectful to everyone there. I had a few incidents where I...
