Agree with harryconway ... in 40 years of playing I've never busted a head.
I don't play lightly but ... I think it has something to do with angle of stick on head.

Is the temperature in the room changing?
Hot and cold temps will change the sound and tuning needed for the snare.

For me, stretching is key.

The shoulders, the hamstrings, the back.
Without stretching, the backs of my legs feel it after a long set.
And the right shoulder aches ... if I don't warm up well....

Go to the store and ask the drum guys. If they've been there awhile they will know who it is. The rep has to call on...

put the song tempo --- if you are using a metronome to count off the song, even better.

I use that a lot with the Launchpad MIDI controller.
Ableton is designed to be played 'live' like an instrument.
