Re: Why linear?

A simple answer to your question is the reason why linear playing is a "discipline" is because a lot of a drummers playing has two or more notes going on a the same time. For example, playing a...

Re: Technique review

I agree with the guy that talked about your hands turning outward. This is not a natural position. On top of that, you don't have space between your thumb and first finger. When I mimic your grip...

Re: Technique review

When you don't put a space between the thumb and first or index finger, it's like you are making a fist and your whole forearm is flexed.

You can make the motion of your wrist up and down, but...

Re: Playing the spaces - how?

Playing the spaces has to do with the physical movement in drumming. Playing time is just not the actual hits on the drums, it is also the space between the notes - between the hits.. They should...

Re: What size is your main snare? Why?

13 x 7 Yamaha Steve Jordan snare has been my main snare for a few years now. I get a lot of compliments on the sound. I've used it for rock and country gigs. It has lots of pop and ring, along...

Re: shuffle is hard...

Slow it down and play it clean. If the particular shuffle you are playing has ghost notes in it, play those clean as well. Really clean and at the proper volume. I really had to do that with "Fool...

Re: shuffle is hard...

Santeria is definitely a half-time shuffle - like 8mile said - it's more or less Rosanna- sped up. Maybe some people don't think it's a shuffle because the music itself is not playing in swing time....

Re: Overplaying

If you are shitting all over the music with your 'chops' then you are overplaying. If you are listening to yourself only, you are probably overplaying.

I get it, there is music out there that...

Re: Same fill problem

I think vocabulary has something to do with it. I mean, if you don't have a lot of words to speak, it's harder to communicate sometimes.

Maybe a little time learning some different phrases, or...

Re: Metronome dependency?

I think it was a good point about "not playing games with the click". We don't get in bands so all the musicians can prove they can play to a click track. The click is a means to an end - the end...

Re: How tight should a drummer's time be?

Metronome work should be done in the woodshed to get your inner clock developed.

The truth is, the audience don't give a shit if you are playing a particular song perfectly at 100bpm. The lament...

Re: Problems with Playing to Songs vs. Practicing/Playing with a Band

I don't think playing along to music say on an iPod or whatever would ever hurt your playing. Playing along with music can help with your time. Playing with musicians is a different animal, that's...

Re: Does riding a bike help with double kick.

The secret with getting more facility with double kick is sitting down at the drums and playing double kick.

Tell your friends.

Re: Rototoms. yay or nay?

Don't bother.

Unless it's a full set of them. Total roto tom kit. Very cool.

Otherwise, it's cheesy.

I did it in my early early days - added a 3pc to my existing 4pc drumset....like the...

Re: Walk this way - need advice on technique

The easiest thing to do is move the cowbell to your left side and play the quarters on the cowbell that way - that way it will free-up your right hand to do the over stuff - which is the open hi hat...

Re: What Do You Think Of My Set Up?

I think some people are into their gear too much.

I mean, I like MY gear. I don't need anybody elses opinion if THEY think my gear is good or cool.

I do worry if I can play well. Go practice...

Re: Playing songs that have amateur drum parts to them

So the drum part is beneath you, huh?

You are talking out both sides of your mouth. At one breath you are saying you have to "dumb your drumming down" and in the next breath you are saying it's...

Re: A most controversial position

Yep yep.

It's kind of the same with the "tradtional grip vs. matched grip age-old argument . What difference does it make? Grip is just a means to an end. The end is hitting the drums and...

Re: A most controversial position

The reason why we play "traditional set up" drums is because it works, that's about it.

I feel some guys just want to play different for the sake of being different and that's silly to me.

Re: Need help understanding what's going on here (video)

No he is not playing 5's

the pattern is

RLRL RRLL accenting the highlighted

I think what is going on is the change in the note rate. In other words, he is playing straight 16th notes (with...
