Re: Some down time...

There's always the usual suspects. Try the "Rosanna" half-time shuffle groove, Steve Gadd's groove to "Late in the Evening", Gene Krupa's solo on "Sing, Sing, Sing", etc.

Or maybe take yourself...

Re: Jazz bossa?

On some quiet Bossa Novas, I use brushes in both hands. The right hand sweeps the 8th notes, sort of imitating a shaker. I play the left hand pattern with the brush on the head or just use a stick...

Re: My final jazz drum set. Is it good? Anything i can improve on?

Exactly.

Please don't be one of those guys that ignores the advice of everyone on the forum and buys crappy cymbals anyway.

Buy used! Save your money, spend a little time and look around your...

Re: Jazz setup

Any easy fix for the beater would be just slip a sock or something over the bass drum beater. Cheaper than a new beater.

Re: Jazz setup

You can totally play jazz on a 20" bass drum. You don't need an 18" or anything small like that. For a winery gig, as background music, you can easily use a 22" (which I assume you have).

Easy...

Re: A question on Real Books

This is pretty much how I've used mine.

It's also a great book to adapt a lot of Syncopation exercises to.

Re: Help me choose a second snare drum

Yep, that's what he meant. Bermuda has mentioned this before. I've used it a few times myself to replicate a low, muted sound from some old blues recordings.

It takes just a second to toss the...

Re: Snare Drum Comparison, Observations

Funny, I just did a similar test of my snares recently and came to the same realization. Despite the differences in my most often used snares, they are all tuned about the same.

My rotation...

Re: Last piece of gear you forgot?

The last thing I forgot was my hi-hat clutch. It somehow got left at the practice space. I realized it was missing as I was setting up.
Luckily, there was a music store about 15 minutes away. I...

Re: How Does Your Band Set Up on Stage?

Same here.

I gotta have the bass player on my left. He can see my foot, I can hear his amp without my ride cymbal washing over it, he can also hear my hi hat better on my left.

One exception...

Re: Other songs that sound like other songs

I've always thought Ten Years After's "Here They Come" had some guitar similarities to Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead Or Alive".

IMO, about as similar as the Led Zep/Spirit "Stairway" thing.

Re: Ever have a drums finish sway you away from purchasing it?

I wasn't a fan of those Ludwig Signet kits when I first saw them. It looks like cheap wallpaper. They are sort of growing on me though. Sort of...

Re: What was the first concert you went to????

Can't top The Beatles...

My first was The Black Crowes opening up for ZZ Top, in 1990 or 1991.

Re: What Metaphors Do You Use in Your Playing?

Ironically, I was going to say the same thing...

I like Larry's trellis analogy. I've always thought of what we do as a sort of framework for the guys to hang their stuff off of.

Another one...

Re: "You're a drummer? Oh can you play..."

A few years ago when a co-worker found out I play drums, particularly in a jazz context, he asked if I played "Girl From Ipanema".

I thought that was so random. Then again, it's probably 1 of...

Re: For those who play at church or not.

I used to play in my church and I absolutely hated playing behind the plexiglass wall. I could never get anyone to understand that the "unwanted sound" actually bounces back at me. At least I had...

Re: Real Life Whiplash

Eww... Definitely thrown them out.

Are those sticks the only place you found blood? Not to creep you out too much, but you might want to check the hardware, throne, etc.

Re: Rock albums with modern production and a great vintage drum sound

Definitely Clutch. I was riding around with my brother-in-law over the holidays, jamming to Clutch in his car. He has a really nice stereo system in his car and that was one of my first thoughts,...

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

That's probably because that isn't a real snare on that cut. It's a Senair snare drum. Apparently one of the first electronic snare drums. Supposedly, Henley liked it and decided to use it for...

Re: Why I Never Collected Famous People’s Autographs

I can see both sides of this.

For me, the autograph is sort of an "I'll never see you again." (I live in Nebraska, which isn't exactly a hotbed of music activity, at least not the folks I want to...
