Re: Snare Trouble

I am a huge fan of using binder clips for all sorts of crazy purposes, but I never thought of this one! Sweet.

Re: Mind Blown - Performing musician meets All State teenager

I've seen that many times. It's funny, because you can take some of the most intensely trained classical musicians and put something outside of their norm in front of them and it just sounds odd....

Re: I feel like I'm in a bit of a pickle.

Treat it like a "festival" gig where there is a backline provided. Bring your snare, hihat, and cymbals and just play.

After the gig, offer to help him tune up his drums and bring some old heads...

Re: Sonor Players Kit from Sam Ash

Haha, reading is fundamental. I should have paid more attention.

Re: Sonor Players Kit from Sam Ash

At my local Sam Ash, I didn't get a chance to play the toms (only tap with a finger), but the kick had a pedal attached to it so I gave it a couple of thumps for good measure. I really liked how...

Re: Sonor Players Kit from Sam Ash

I stopped into my local Sam Ash this weekend and saw this lovely little kit there. I was in a hurry, but the look of this kit impressed me enough to stop and give it a quick-and-dirty test. I hit the...

Re: Drum and Recording Help

Video wise, not too bad, although I think a tripod would be good so that camera could be higher up (a little over head height looking down at the kit seems to be the most widely used position for...

Re: How to make my kick sound less boomy without using muffling?

Tune the resonant head tighter than it is now. Like, a full turn or two on each lug (assuming that you have it tuned JAW on the resonant head). The batter head gives you the attack, while the...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz - Mounted Tom

I replaced the full-sized GTS mounts on my Renown kit with the Ludwig ATLAS mounts. No drilling involved, other than the drilling into the pocketbook for the ATLAS mounts at $50 a pop! I bought them...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

Bermuda, I just had an idea.

Perhaps you could suggest to the people at Ludwig that they send out a 12" shell (or even just a portion of a shell) to the various "big box" retailers (GC, Sam Ash,...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

TL;DR Saw the Signets in person. I liked the sound, I'm not blown away by the aesthetics, but I think this is a good move by Ludwig.

Long version:

So I stopped at the local GC yesterday to...

Re: Recording with a Metronome

I can't understand it either. It's like he has a panic attack when the click comes on.

Re: Recording with a Metronome

Our lead singer / rhythm guitarist simply cannot play to a click to save his life. I have no idea why, but we eventually recorded without one, which worked out fairly well except you cannot go back...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

I like the idea, but I have two concerns.

The first is that I would imagine that after a few years of playing (with all of the micro vibrations from the hitting the drum) that the lugs would...

Re: Musicians who don't want to rehearse

What you are describing ("holding each other's hands") is getting together to practice, not rehearse. Practice is what you do on your time, rehearsal is what you do on the band's time. Getting...

Re: amplifying bass drum from backline.

The problem is that you are putting a mic-level signal into a line level input. Just because it has a combo 1/4" + XLR jack doesn't mean you can just plug a microphone into it and go to town. The...

Re: Musicians who don't want to rehearse

Bermuda pretty much sums it up. I think that for a new band (or in this case a band that is revamping itself, adding a new singer, etc) having 2 3-hour rehearsals a week would be the natural thing...

Re: Left handed on a "normal" setup / Openhanded

Playing openhanded is perfectly valid, if it is what makes sense to you, especially if you can groove better openhanded as opposed to cross handed. Since you feel your hands make sense keeping time...

Re: Rhythm perception

There's also the "micro-timing" sensation that I get when I'm playing and in certain measures I totally know that I just played something a hair out of time, and it bugs me for a measure or so, and I...

Re: An attempt at a policy change here

The overall tone of most of the commenters to this thread has been "as long as someone is an established member of the community and doesn't overdo it, a little self-promotion is perfectly...

Re: The Winery Dogs and Mike Portnoy

I've been listening to their album nonstop for a bout a week. It's really good and they gel very well together. I like the "bluesy rock with prog flourishes every now and then" feel of all of their...

Re: Can't let go

I have a ride cymbal that I have had for 20 years. It used to be my main ride but I've since moved on to others. I still keep it around and earlier this year I tried to sell it. Luckily, no one...

Re: New Dream Theater Album Stream

I know Mike P wasn't the only reason for their descent into the doom and gloom darker metal territory of the 2000's, but the last album to some extent and what I've heard of this one so far (I'm on...

Re: Review: Gretsch Legend brass snare (plus a bonus S-Hoop review!)

There are a few little things that I noticed over the Pork Pie BoB, but the main "upgrade" is the same dual strainer that comes on their more expensive drums (fine adjustments on the strainer, large...

Re: Review: Gretsch Legend brass snare (plus a bonus S-Hoop review!)

I wouldn't say that it dampens the drum very much, it's probably the equivalent of using a die-cast rim (like putting 1/2 of a moongel on the batter head). Cleans up the overtones a tiny bit but it...
