Re: Things guitarist tell drummers to do...

First band I ever played in...the guitarist - a huge fan of the Grateful Dead - asked me to play 'something freaky'.

I tried a sort of off-kilter beat, and he waved me off: 'No, no...freaky.'

I...

Re: Playing with a click track

Great post! Sums up my feelings about the click. I'm still fairly bad at playing to a click - I really only started truly using a metronome for practice a short while ago (shamefully) - but I...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Yes, I'm sure we all tell ourselves that repeatedly...some of us even believe it.

Look, if you have to go through verbal acrobatics to arrive at a resolution that pleases you, that right there may...

Re: New Sly Stone Box Set: Drummer Greg Errico to Tour This Summer

Oh, YEAH! Greg Errico was one of my early favorites - criminally underrated drummer!

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Very happy to see so many on this forum agreeing with the premise of the article. And very entertained to see so many angered by it.

A note to those who are trying to compare playing music with...

Re: Ian Paice rocks!!!

What I'm discovering is that when I'm adding drum parts to a new song, and I come up with a beat or fill that I think is really happening, it's never too long before I realize I'm just aping a drum...

Re: people that look like drummers

That reminds of a strange occurrence several years ago...I was at a supermarket, minding my own business, when a hippy-type, patchouli-scented woman approached me with a flyer in hand.

She asked,...

For normal humans, this is true, but Phil...Phil's a machine. Just ask Rick Rubin.

Re: The state of pop music

Familiar with the Cosmic Psychos? Saw them play a club in Florida back in the late 90's and they were one of the most kick-ass rock bands I've ever seen live.

Re: Too Old To Play???

Yeah! That's what I like to hear!

I saw Joe Clay playing at 67 years old, and he was kicking ass. I saw Max Roach perform when he was about 70 and he was amazing.

These are the kind of guys...

Re: The state of pop music

Wow, reading the above comments brought me to a very fundamental question: What is pop music? How is it defined?

If it's simply 'popular music', then Led Zeppelin and Metallica fit the...

Re: Drinking and Drumming

I always told myself that if I want to drum like my heroes John Bonham, Ringo Starr, Mitch Mitchell, Alex Van Halen, Keith Moon, Stewart Copeland, Phil Rudd, Topper Headon, Phil Collins, Elvin Jones,...

Re: Talking to the doctors now....

My mistake. When you used 'we' in the post I quoted, I thought 'we' referred to 'my physician and I'.

But I still maintain Larry knows more than he's letting on.

Re: Talking to the doctors now....

Umm...Larry's recommendations were, ultimately, seconded by Bo's doctor:

Maybe Lar knows more about this than he lets on.

Re: Bouncing problem

Wow, GDM, I went through the exact same thing when I tried an unported head! It was not too long ago - I was really freaking out about how bad my foot technique had suddenly become, so I came on this...

Re: Bringing the beater back

Ditto. (Just substitute 'thirty' for 'fifty' and it all rings true for me.) For some reason, bringing the beater back never even occurred to me.

I suppose I always wanted a thuddy-sounding bass...

Re: How tense are you when you play?

Been playing drums almost thirty years now.

Think I finally started to really relax during the last two. No joke.

Re: How do I know if I will stick with drums? Advice please.

Gosh, Jim, you struck me as a 'sunny-side-of-the-street' kind of fella. Your outlook has always sounded upbeat to me.

Now that I think of it, most of the posters on this forum seem to be...

Re: How do I know if I will stick with drums? Advice please.

Line the three instruments up at one side of the room.

You stand on the other.

Whichever comes to you first is the one you were meant for.

Okay, sorry, just being a pain in the ass. (I...

Re: Drumming in the pre digital age.

I've actually started collecting stories of my van adventures in the 90's and early 2000's. From what I can tell, one of the biggest changes in the music industry due to technology is the touring...
