Re: Tuning Tom Heads To The Same Pitch

I would think that would only be true if all instruments were located at the same point in the room?

Re: What if we quantized Bonham?

I'm about to make myself a pariah here, but I don't mind the quantised version as much as I thought I would, and not nearly as much as most folks.

I don't think perfection is needed or even...

Re: Problem with George Way Snare

Nope. In my ignorance, I didn't know I needed to. I just popped the head off and measured, and when I found the widest measurement at the lug locations that were higher pitched than the others, I...

Re: Problem with George Way Snare

Update to the update -

After an email asking a few basic questions, Ronn called me directly to discuss the issue with the drum. Top notch service!

As it turns out, the problem stemmed from...

Re: Problem with George Way Snare

I updated the original post, but wanted to let everyone know that Ronn Dunnett responded to my email and is working with me on this. Thanks Ronn, and everyone who wisely suggested I talk to him.

Re: Problem with George Way Snare

Yeah, that's a good plan. I hadn't thought about that, as the drum is over a year old, but I should at least contact him. Thanks, K. Good to have you back here, BTW.

Re: Problem with George Way Snare

Yep, it's a bit peanut shaped.

Not sure how to steam it, and I'm also not sure if that would ruin the finish, but it seems like an idea that might work.

Problem with George Way Snare

I've having increasing difficulty tuning my George Way walnut snare. I thought it might be a head problem, so I've tried several, with no improvement. Certain lugs are higher pitched than the...

Re: It wasn't my intention to be so exacting but....

You know how many people I've heard of having trouble with those Yamaha lugs?

Zero.

I'd just play it. An 18" floor tom has so little tension on the lugs anyway.

Re: Drum construction splitting hairs geek out stuff (Andy alert)

Larry, I can't answer your questions, obviously, but I have a thought about the part I quoted.

I don't think tension, or resistance, in and of itself is bad. While it's and apples to oranges...

Re: Mapex Model Recognition Assistance

I have played one of those kits, and they sounded quite good. A nice smooth, round tone.

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

I understand! I have tinnitus as well as substantial loss in certain frequency ranges, especially high frequencies. The result is, what sounds good to me often sounds tinny or harsh to others. The...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

I don't know that it's just like telling someone who is blind to watch movies better, but I know from experience that hearing loss can make it difficult to hear all the frequencies you need to. The...

Re: Drummers that can't tune drums.

Of course it sounds different, but the fallacy in your example is that "tuning" drums changes much more than the pitch of the instrument. It changes the actual quality of the sound.

That said, I...

Re: Snare Drum Comparisons

Interesting - I reviewed, side-by-side while open in two tabs, the two vids using the full mic array and the OH only. You're right - they are closer than I would have expected. I believe I hear a...

Re: Snare Drum Comparisons

My first thought was, wow, I REALLY prefer the snare with more depth (the Starphonic), but I wonder if you aren't on to something, Andy. I think it warrants another comparison, switching the position...

Re: Middle tom doesn't resonate

I have had this experience. At the time, I was flying the tom off a cymbal stand, so the mount wasn't the issue. I could move the entire stand away from the bass drum, without adjusting the height or...

Re: Recording a cover officially - our story so far

Question for you, Andy. What happens after the three years? You take the recording down? You renew? You no longer get $ for downloads? How does that work?
