Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

I was going to say that too.

Way back before the internet told you a new album was coming out months before it did, you could tell Van Halen had a new album on the radio just by the drums.

Re: Top level guys that do local gigs

Most name players who are known as sidemen do. Less so if they're full-time band members of a name band.

As Bermuda said, it's not really about the money. Some of it is just a chance to stay...

Re: Counting off the song w/banter

I used to cut off my old lead singer all the time by counting off and starting the song.

No one needs that much banter.

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

I'm going to buck the trend and agree with the OP.

Not because playing the original part is not the right thing to do. It is.

But because the rest of the band probably can't follow it.

Re: Can't upload an audio file here.

I don't think the server is really set up for attachments.

Though I see the option exists.

Re: Metal drum mixes without triggers or sound replacement

Exactly.

And if you take a tablespoon of water from the lake and a tablespoon of water from the puddle, put them side by side, you can't tell the difference.

Now put a tablespoon of tap water...

Re: Dunnett acrylic kit really worth $4000?

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I can't see any justification for someone to be willing to pay anywhere near that.

Re: Metal drum mixes without triggers or sound replacement

I'm not even sure how one can tell anymore.

Most drums that aren't triggered are compressed and EQ-ed to sound like a trigger. And as sampling technology has gotten better and better over the...

Re: Worst expensive snare you've ever owned?

What you need is a DW snare drum with a Ludwig throw off. lol

Maybe the extra holes in the shell from changing the strainers is the secret.

As for the Yamaha...

Re: The Train Beat

^ This.

hence, why playing the notes may be easy, but getting the vibe right can be difficult.

Re: The Train Beat

The notes, sure, that's the easy part. But getting the vibe right is difficult if it's not part of what you listen to a lot.

There was a hard rock band around town when I was in my early 20's,...

Re: Talk about a drumming revelation you've had

For me, this was the biggest revelation; that there are no rules and to just let go.

I recall as a teenager watching various drummers on MTV, and not watching them as examples, but watching them...

Re: I wonder if Neil Peart will ever play again?

My guess is no.

If you read his books, well before the final tour, he stopped enjoying touring.

And with all he went through, it was amazing he ever came back for the last few tours he did...

I drove right past Jammin' Jersey the other day.

But I didn't.

Re: Ever have a drumming dream?

I had a strange dream last night.

One of the bands Living Dead Drummer plays with drafted me to do a gig because Nick couldn't make it. I wasn't asked, I was told, I had no choice.

And the...

Re: Just an observation

I see both sides.

I was born in 1970 so I was a teenager in the 80's.

And while I listened to a lot of new music in the 80's, I also spent a lot of time listening to 60's and 70's music. The...

And that was like 15 years ago.

I went in there once. The guy there was far more interested in showing me his Weckl/Vinnie inspired chops than showing me any products I might be interested in.

Re: Los Angeles drum shops

Yup.

Guitar Center made offers to a few of West LA Music's top employees they couldn't refuse, then opened a GC location not far from West Music LA.

The owner of West LA Music wasn't a...
