Re: How do you know when to crash?

True, but also used for accents anywhere in a bar of music. The answer to the OP's question is quite complex.

Re: What sticking do you use?

Different stickings also allow you to play the same fill with different accents, use different voices, and end the fill at different places on the kit. So you not only have your own sound and feel,...

Re: Fast double bass rolls

I think it's mental. I play barefooted, if I play with shoes on it's not that I can't play as well, it's that the only thing on my mind is "I can't feel the pedals" and this somehow does affect how...

Re: Ever have a drumming dream?

Same dream almost every time. Can't get my bass drum pedals positioned. I'm usually sitting about a foot off the floor so my knees are up to my chest and I can't operate the pedals.

Re: Open Handed Drumming

You can't put everything on the right side just because you're right handed :D There are all kinds of ways that closed-handed players play the hats open handed. What happens when you want to play...

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

That's an easily defeated argument anyway. To this day I enjoy the latest metal, jazz fusion, and others. So it has nothing to do with not liking something "new".

I've despised pop since my...

Re: Drum throne height mechanics back pain

I could be wrong but I think a lot of really low-sitting rock drummers learned to play that way for the same reason some guitarist play their guitars down around their knees. Up high is nerdy, low is...

Re: Double strokes with a shortboard

I totally agree with respect to all out speed, but double strokes can be the best way to play certain double bass patterns, to avoid awkward or near impossible single stroke gymnastics.

Re: Instrument infatuation

And why is that? I couldn't disagree more. Of course it should matter. It's not infatuation at all. An infatuation is an unreasonable fixation. There's nothing unreasonable or fleeting about the love...

Re: How important is knowing the songs?

Learning theory doesn't require reading music. The two are complementary but not synonymous or interdependent.

^ That looks excellent for practicing.

Re: Which do you enjoy most: Playing by yourself, jamming with others, or playing live?

Love to practice, but of course jamming with a band beats everything. I mostly enjoy the creative process, even more than playing live.

Re: How did you start getting "loose" on difficult fills?

Learning to play more dynamically helped me loosen up and move more naturally and efficiently, and just plain sound better.

Re: Double bass frustration

That blows my mind. I can play 16ths comfortably up to 260, but start to strain on single foot 1/8 notes above 200.
Apparently I've developed a more efficient ankle motion on double bass, whereas...

Re: Double bass frustration

Believe me I've been there. My first two years learning DB were so frustrating. Like you said one day it's great then the next day seemed like I had made no progress at all. It all really came down...

Re: Questions for metal drummers on the forum

Concentrate on quarter notes or 8th notes rather than straining to focus on listening to the 16ths or 32nds.
Not only does this make "hearing fast" easier, but for me it also actually physically...

Re: At which point do polyrhythms stop sounding cool and start sounding academic?

I just don't like to listen to it for an entire song. Particularly in metal and hard rock, because (for me) there HAS to be a relatively straight forward groove at some point.

Re: Kick Technique - Pedal, Throne Height and Footware

How long have you been playing? For my first couple of years, the slightest difference in my seating position and pedal settings would affect my playing. Once I developed my pedal technique enough...

Re: Practicing too much double bass?

There are techniques like these for feet. I just don't know if there's a way to teach them. Your legs (or brain) eventually adapt to extreme speed by incorporating Moeller type movements, so that...

Re: Sorry Neil......Ringo and Paul has much more "feel" than you

I've tried improvising to Rush songs in the past. If I try to get all feely and swingy, it just doesn't fit. Just like trying to put really good drumming to Beatles songs.

Ringo's drumming isn't...

Re: Can't consistently hit max bpms

What hand technique are you using at high speeds? That technique should not only facilitate speed, but also help you play relaxed.

Also (just my opinion) FIVE minutes at your max speed is...

Re: Your full name on your bass drum head

In the 60s and 70s so many drummers were pioneers. Regardless of how technically talented they were, much of the time they were doing something original and timeless. In light of this, their names...
