Re: Anti-Slip Drumsticks?

Hear, Hear!

I'm not one for tape or gloves (or barefoot playing either for that matter).

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

You know, I bet if we were in the same room together we would probably find out that we are both much more in agreement than we realize. Talking about this stuff is a poor substitute for seeing it. ...

Better after time off?

For those of you who care, I've been studying hand technique with Bill Bachman for about a year now. He is getting my hands together after my injury and surgery. He's awesome.

But that's not the...

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

I don't get it, are you saying that you can play a 32nd note double stroke roll at 110 BPM while accenting the second stroke? Because that was the point of my post.

Are you also saying that...

Re: Shoes and Gloves

I find playing barefoot so strange. It reminds me of the barefoot running fad that was big a few years ago, until all of the people doing it started developing shin splints and plantar fascia issues....

Re: Simon Phillips talks 'bout open handed, dynamics, big sound and recording :)

That Recording Tips vid was great. I have never heard anyone discuss that idea regarding the bass drum under a tom fill.

As a matter of fact, most drummers would tell you to play the bass drum...

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

I would like to see/hear a video of a rock/metal guy playing a fill at 110 BPM, throwing 32nd note doubles on the toms and not have the volume not drop off compared to the 16ths.

The only way...

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

Definitely true, but rock drummers use singles on toms. That was my point. Even in a fill that incorporates double strokes, those doubles tend to be on a snare in a rock context.

In a gospel,...

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

I'm with Wave on this one. In a rock context I'm never playing doubles on the toms. It just drops the volume and attack too much.

Re: Being dragged out of the 60's

By the way:

"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm is in itself a cover of the Michael Jackson original.

So you are covering the white boy version of the song. Funny.

What's this I'm hearing...

Re: Lovers of metal drumming ...

The guy's heel-toe technique is spot on. Flows very smoothly. Really gives the impression of ease when compared to singles. Not as powerful acoustically, of course, but very impressive.

Re: 420 musicians onstage

Actually, that's one of the more popular origin myths.

I hear you, I would assume any audiologist could shoot this nonsense down in moments.

Just hope the judge is not a guitarist...

Re: Good exercises to do away from the kit and pad?

Warning: Crazy abstract concepts coming up.

I spent a few years walking in polyrhythmic time. I would walk at a certain rate and set a pulse with my feet. I would then play any odd tuplet with my...

Re: Visualizing rhythm ... absolutely brilliant

I enjoyed how the author was able to relate such apparently disparate musical styles through their rhythmic take on the stressed/unstressed two beats.

A sign of an idea being correct is how it...

Re: Michel Camilo on drummers ....

Every time I watch/listen to Gadd I am blown away by his mastery. His playing is so organic, he makes so many others sound contrived and robotic by comparison. He embodies what Michel was talking...

Re: Something strange is happening

It's hard to describe but try this:

Grab the stick like a hammer, really tightly. Now, wave it around. It feels really light, right?

Now, be as relaxed as possible and barely hold on to the...

Re: Something strange is happening

Without getting too much into specific technique discussions, practicing on a pillow forces your muscles to lift the stick back up. This causes more muscle engagement than required for a free stroke...

Re: Working On thomas Lang's Creative Coordination....

Thomas is great and seems to be a great guy as well. But, to tell the truth, his creative coordination book seems highly derivative of Marco Minneman's Extreme Interdependence, which came out years...

I hear what you're saying. But then again, this was a grown man playing, not a 13 year old kid. We don't have to treat him as a fragile psyche.

I remember Tommy Igoe out and out laughing at my...

Enough of this nonsense. You go around in that ambidextrous thread of yours as if you are Mike Mangini himself and yet you don't have enough musical maturity or taste to recognize unmitigated garbage...

Re: That moment.....when the band are 'on it'....

I played a gig in Buenos Aries a few months ago to the most intense, fun loving crowd of kids that I have ever seen.

They had never heard us but they were chanting "Hey" on 2 and 4 by the second...

Huh? He did so bad that this video went viral. I've seen it on Break, The Chive and Youtube.

If you don't think this is a perfect example of what not to do, then I'm afraid you have no clue. It is...
