Re: Best drums under $1500?

Eames drums are great, and you can get them very reasonably used, when they turn up, because they don't have the same name recognition as Keller-- I've seen several great looking sets on ebay in the...

Re: Playing the cymbals softer than the drums.

Playing any pop style, yes-- probably more in recording than live. Apparently it's a big issue for some recording engineers...

That's great, congratulations! MD's the big one. Could you send me that contact, too?

Re: Endings

I like endings. I get annoyed if the band doesn't listen during them-- it's not just making noise-- it should be like a little free composition. It's not just time to go crazy on the drums, totally...

Re: Jazz

It doesn't matter, man-- quotes are quotes for a reason. You can't just slap Miles's name on whatever you think he said once according to Hal Blaine.

Re: Jazz

The quote as Blaine says it is "I hated crowds." I think he's taking an old joke and mistakenly attributing it to Miles, because that's kind of a ridiculous taken at face value. Jazz was popular...

Re: Jazz

What's the source for that Miles quote? That sounds like made up BS.

Re: I'm a jaded music industry guy

Well, you don't know what you're missing. Hearing the Blue Devils or SCV on Ludwig drums in the early 80s was just an entirely different experience than this current thing-- way more viscerally...

Re: I'm a jaded music industry guy

And it still doesn't make it-- listening from the stands, they're pathetically weak-- no power. And it screws up the sound of the ensemble-- the range where the snare drum is supposed to be is just...

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

About 22-72. Lots of post-college guys, lots of guys 27-55.

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

"Drink heavily", in other words.

For God's sake, yes. Bathe daily.

Right, I've never heard of musicians doing any of this non-musical stuff. You do safety drills (which for us largely...

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

Anybody doing professional gigs should be able to answer this as well as I can. I haven't worked on ships in ~10 years, but I don't think the racket has changed much. I wrote this post here about...

Re: Jazz Comping Bass Drum

Well, start hitting the 4 instead-- you can play the snare drum on the & of 3 before it, and have that be your home-base thing. Kenny Clarke and a lot of other people do that all over the place.

...

Re: Jazz Comping Bass Drum

Good question. "Not that busy", I guess would be my answer. I don't "feather" except on dance gigs. For every 8 bars of playing, I could play maybe 2-10 comping notes on the SD or BD. I haven't...

Re: Jazz

I don't know about hardest-- Afro-Cuban drumming is pretty intense, and there's plenty of hard stuff written for other areas of drumming, too. If you're just looking for hard exercises to play, I...

Re: Drum Sticks for New Students

I've never started young students with small sticks, but I've also never seriously taught a seven year old. I guess you could try some VF SD-4 Combos. They're about the size of a 7A, but shorter, and...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

That's awesome! What a complete crybaby. Though I'm a little disappointed that my "zenith of mediocrity" comment didn't make the cut.

Re: Best Jazz Songs

Best tunes vs. best tunes to learn vs. best drum tracks vs. best ones for you to play along with may not all be the same groups of tunes. Here are some good tracks to play with:

Miles Davis - So...

I can't speak for the others, but it takes a better writer than this guy to make me angry. But the things people have brought up here are legitimate. And I don't know why people being angry about...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Doesn't f___n' matter. If you're doing a service, and someone wants to hire you, you get paid.

Not true, doesn't f___n' matter even if it was. Working musicians are not necessarily the best...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

The music business is awash in money. Why are musicians the only part of it who should not expect to be paid?

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Another one who's not handling his lack of talent very gracefully. As clickbait, I give it a C+. Not the worst example of the genre I've seen, not good either. I was waiting for him to turn it around...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

Despite the way I phrased that, I think I do get it, actually. I mean, I don't understand the mindset that goes into the making this stuff, but after so many dozens of basically identical tracks, I...
