Re: I'm at a loss. I can't tune a drum to save my life.

1: Inspect/clean/lubricate each rod, washer, and swivel nut. Give consideration to nylon/composite washers.
2: Work in smaller radians and more frequent taps.
3: When the head of the tuning...

Re: How do I know if I will stick with drums? Advice please.

While I play several instruments, it's easiest for me if I commit to one instrument (academically) for a pre defined duration. I've committed to taking drum lessons and practicing drums for 2 years....

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

American satire doesn't translate well overseas. They simply find it to be sarcastic and condescending.

On the flip side, when I told a Welsh gent that I had just returned from seeing my mother,...

Re: Drum mic recommendations

A number of my friends own a cheap set (CAD/Samson/etc), but use a high quality kick and snare mic. They end up using the cheap BD mic for the floor tom. Their explanation is that, for most small...

Re: When disaster strikes: Your opinion

Before you leave...

Run through the house with a camera. Take a picture of anything that has value. That way, you have something to submit to the insurance company.

Re: Left or Right play?

Welcome to the forum!

There are only two advantages of left-playing-right.

1: It makes sharing kits easy
2: It makes mimicking other left play-right drummers (Ringo, Bonham, Moon, Beauford)...

Re: How do I know if I will stick with drums? Advice please.

If you feel like you have a lifelong calling to expressing yourself through music, it's entirely possible that you're on your way to becoming a multi-instrumentalist, writer, or producer.

Figure...

Re: When disaster strikes: Your opinion

I have a 75' Les Paul Deluxe that I managed to take with me through my first divorce.... I think that falls somewhere between "Forrest Fire" and "Giant Squid...

Re: 10 lug bowties on a Supra?

LM 300. Came with select "Rocker's" kits and with a student-tote kit.

Re: New Drums

I think the main disconnect between you and I is with the term "Fine Instrument". It might have to do with my luthier background, but the term has always possessed a special connotation that goes...

Re: New Drums

It only reveals that I read the OP's post. I make no correlation or generalizations regarding geography and quality. That said, I do disagree that the PDP CM is even remotely close to the quality...

Re: Making $ playing drums

When I was an instructor for guitar, I retrofitted an old 70's Avon tackle-cart that I sold strings, picks, cables, blank cassettes, and other staples out of. It was an extra $200-300 per month in a...

Re: New Drums

I'm not sure how anyone could come to the conclusion that this is what I was saying. Sonor and Yamaha both produce fine instruments overseas, but the import duties make them less worthwhile than a...

Re: One or two mids toms?

It's all about how many notes you need to convey a phrase. If you're in a band that has a high dynamic range (whisper quiet to super loud), you can typically use accented notes on a 1U1D setup to...

Re: Bass drum muffling - advice please

One thing I would recommend against in this instance is the Evans EQ Pad.

They're quite unlike a pillow in that they jump off the head with...

Re: What's your process for coming up with drum grooves for songs?

I usually start with my intuition, which is usually a close facsimile of shadowing. I do some iteration with doubles to listen for where they might fit. I often try some latin patterns just to see...

Re: New Drums

The question your post asks is the age old dilemma of:

"Do I buy a real USA made instrument, or an APAC made instrument of lesser quality for half the price?"

People usually mull it over and...

Re: Bass drum muffling - advice please

I have an EMAD on my 22" Renown. It doesn't affect volume so much as it changes the timbre and duration of the note. When I want to control volume, I change to heel-down and play at the intensity...

Re: Bid like a man!

I hear this a lot.

$2 was the bid increment. It's entirely likely that the top bidder had a max bid of well over the $2 delta, but since the increment was $2, that's how it works out.

You bid...

Re: Shooting for a 50's sounding snare! Any advice?

I believe the 50s/60s-esque wooden Acrolite equivalent would be the Ludwig (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8L4ZITtv08) Pioneer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gdAe9vKlnE), which might be a cost...

Re: A dumb customer?

With the GC next to me, they never stock anything that I would ever want to buy. For example, the Gretsch kit on display and in stock is a Marquee. There isn't a single Zildjian A or K in the...
