Re: Elementary jazz question about accenting on the ride

Rule number one of jazz club is "you do not talk about jazz club".

Re: Can you read sheet music?

I can read and write rhythms/"drum notation". To me "sheet music" implies melodic notation too, which I never learned.

I want to, though. I'm going to go back to get some guitar lessons and...

Re: The big debate: tribute bands - yay or nay!?

Were they good? Tool is one of those bands that I almost never hear good covers of. Kinda like Zeppelin; tons and tons of covers out there, but few capture the magic correctly.

Bill has a lot more skill, and a bit less hair.

Re: Drum shops in NYC or San Fran

Yea, I know who you're talking about and I always seek him out if I have a question or need. Glasses, kinda thin, right? He's helped me fill out my dream of having a full vintage A set without...

Re: How do you count while playing drums?

Counting can be thought of like singing if you do it right.

Since we know how to count sub-divisions, we can use those markers to "sing" drum parts with the markers.

For example counting out...

Re: Any "fun" grooves for practice pad?

A sense of humor can lead to having fun, which is detrimental to your practice pad work. I wish all these idiots would stop pushing fun on people when they really need to be seriously practicing.

Re: Drum shops in NYC or San Fran

Yea, I'm going to berk. Found some good stuff there and they usually haggle a bit on the used stuff. Nobody ever mentioned the warehouse inventory. I just don't like buying stuff online and SM...

Re: Drum shops in NYC or San Fran

Pretty much no.

GC sucks. Starving musician doesn't have all that much, but it's where I buy stuff.

Re: Any "fun" grooves for practice pad?

Sheesh. The kids these days. If it were meant for fun, it would be called a fun pad instead of a practice pad. If you smile while you practice, you're doing it wrong. Stop having fun.

Re: Loud drums

I have definitely experienced having to slightly alter how I'm playing for some snares. Certain metal drums can really crack, and the wood ones sound soft and quiet by comparison.

Re: Loud drums

I've played drums that I thought were more quiet than others... I guess by comparison, others could be louder. I think wood species would change the sound perception a lot also. A brighter higher...

Re: Acoustic Drums VS Electronic Drum Kits

Be aware that most of the time, electronic kits are not silent, and it's quite common to get complaints from neighbors hearing all the bump bump and clak clack of the pads.

Re: Tricks for faster set up

Yea, this is good. I only fold up the base, and leave all the other settings when possible.

Also, for my stands where there's no memory lock going on, I have electrical tape to mark where things...

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

I guess I just don't see so many "consequences" as others do. If you personally have a superior product that people want to buy, they will buy it from you for that reason, even if a lower quality...

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

If you were offering a better product that got the venue more money from the show, I doubt they'd go with the free guys. If I want to play for free in a bar because I think it's fun, it's really,...

Re: Train beat using paradiddles?

The para-diddle is just a sticking for the most part, so putting the accents on "2 and 4" and keeping the speed going, ideally, nobody would know you're even doing para-diddle sticking.

I do that too, but always saw it as a sort of river or stream I'm following.

Re: No more jam sessions for me. I'm done

I don't get cats who say they can't solo. If you can groove, literally you can keep doing that, maybe put a few more fills than you would with the band, if you're confident, maybe displace some...

Re: No more jam sessions for me. I'm done

Hey Pal, if you are close enough to Livermore, inland a bit from the bay, there's a cool jam on Wed I can introduce you to. It would be nice to have some other good drummers there. Super laid back...

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

You guys might appreciate this one:

We got paid for a charity show a few weeks ago when we expected not to. The venue/organizer insisted after our set! I put my portion right back in the...

Re: Hi hat cymbal seat?

Skew on the bottom cymbal also makes it "easier" to get a washy sound as the pies touch sooner as you close them. But mostly, it's the lock thing mentioned.
