Re: Just saw "The Wrecking Crew" movie

I've had the privilege of covering some Jim Gordon tunes over the years. 'Your So Vain' is one signature tune that whenever I hear it.. I'm instantly transported back to the early 70's, driving...

Re: Flashy Hi-Hat Work - Practice Suggestions?

That guy is killing it.. and adjusting his in-ear monitors, and checking his watch at the same time! He looks a lot like Carter Beauford style.. french grip/thumbs up. I do a lot of that stuff.. but...

Re: Just saw "The Wrecking Crew" movie

I watched Muscle Shoals on Netflix the other day (great btw).. and was shocked to find out that Roger Hawkins played drums on Aretha Franklin's 'Respect'! I've played that tune for years with various...

Re: Endings

I have a bagful of 'endings' I lean on from time to time, some of these include;
- the What is Hip ending - sizzly hihat hold - followed by a loud snare flam-kick
- the fast single stroke snare...

Re: Does Chris Dave use Mike Mangini's 'shiver' technique?

No he doesn't .. but on DVD1 he shows a bunch of techniques for achieving the same effect without tension - and without screwing up your hands. Plus, he makes it look so damn easy!

Re: Does Chris Dave use Mike Mangini's 'shiver' technique?

I'd just say be careful trying to do this.. if you don't use the right technique and just start shaking your wrists trying to achieve insane speeds.. you can easily develop wrist and hand issues....

Re: My Half Time Shuffle

Steve Jordan does stuff like that in his sleep.. check out the original studio versions of the Blues Bros tracks where he shifts effortlessly between killer/double/swing shuffles and 6/8 rock...

Re: Your favorite linear triplet fills

That fill has been a staple of rock drummers for eons.. I think I first learned it from Ian Paice's solo on Deep Purple in Rock in 1970. There are so many possible ways of using it and combinations...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

I'd say the writer epitomizes why some writers DON'T deserve to get paid... just a silly argument with not a lot of laughs in it (assuming he was trying to be funny).

I always say 'I get paid for...

Re: Paul McCartney Interview...

Cool.. Paul is a modern day Mozart - a bonafide musical genius - as all the other Beatles were. I can see his point about the Lennon McCartney thing.. couldn't they have just Bolded the text in the...

Re: Why the "hate" for nylon tips??

Never heard of a 'hate on' for nylon tips. In any case that why they make drum bags - I keep a mixed bag of everything.. but I generally use Vic Firth 5AN nylon tips. Why? I like the feel, balance...

Re: Funkiest 6/8 ever..

Ha.. although I count it in 6/8 I was referring to it as a 3/4 waltz as an inside joke to myself (haha - I kill myself sometimes!)... let me explain;

I had to play a wedding and the client asked...

Funkiest 3/4 ever..

I had to learn the drum part for Joe Cocker's version of 'A Little Help from my Friends'.. and was blown away by the funky waltz beat the drummer played. Never heard a funk-rock waltz before like...

Re: hihat position: the glitch

That's possible.. I've been trying them lower lately. It does seem to be a bit less of a stretch and more in line with the arc of the stick.

I like the description of positioning by clock hands. I...

hihat position: the glitch

Do you ever catch a stick tip under the hihat cymbals when you're playing - and usually not looking? It happens rarely, but when it does it drives me crazy..it breaks the groove and if a mic is close...

Re: Bringing the beater back

I play heel up most of the time. Heel down can achieve the same speeds (see THomas Lang) and also naturally pulls the beater away from the head... but I find it puts too much focus on the ankle. I...

Re: Snare rim-click help

Yay for cross-stick .. boo for rim-click. (side-stick is also okay). Cross-over is crossing your hands, usually rolling around the toms.

Now that my pet peeve is out of the way. You need to...

Re: 1 measure lick ideas for solos

Ya... I agree with the other posters. Don't try to write out a solo; improvise and try to think musically or melodically with the tune at hand. If you have a MIDI keyboard you could record the basic...

Re: Fast Shuffle Technique

Really? In that case I use Moeller all the time but didn't know it! I stand corrected - I must be an expert on Moeller then! LoL..

All the demos I've ever seen on Moeller usually show the whipping...

Re: Fast Shuffle Technique

Haha.. not quite. I'm not a Moeller expert but there's no big whipping motion or up-down-tap etc.

Re: Fast Shuffle Technique

I think you're thinking it's more complicated than it really is.. there's no Moeller or push-pull techniques involved .. it's just a matter of letting the stick bounce with a steady rocking motion.....
