Like MDJ said, get a good teacher. This is critical. I was mediocre until I found my current teacher 2 years ago. Since then my snare playing has really improved as well as my performance on the kit....

I totally agree. It's more important to play in clean for a minute than to be able to go all out for 5 seconds. Being able to play it clean and precisely is more important overall.
