Re: Advice on an aluminum snare wood hoops

I'd ditch the wood hoops. Aluminum is a bit on the dry side compared to steel or brass and the wood hoops will only dry it out more. I'd invest in some 2.3 mm flange or die cast hoops. If you're a...

Re: Does your gear HAVE to be the same brand or do you mix/match?

Drums: all Tama including Stewart Copeland snare

Hardware: all Tama (if hihat clutches count, than I have both Tama and DW)

Re: Odd-time Book recommendations

Ralph Humphrey "Even In The Odds" is another popular one. It's a bit newer but Rick Landwehr's "Drummer's Guide to Odd Times" looks pretty good too.

Re: The Art of Bop Drumming page 36

Play the snare hits on 2 & 4 as stick on stick rim shots and you'll have one of Roy Hayne's signatures. Most of the great jazz drummers use 16ths in their playing. In the past I had tendencies to...

Re: Toms ring too long

If you're trying to get your drums to sound like the ones you hear on a recording, you won't. Recorded drums are so heavily eq'd that the way we hear them are not the way that the drummer hears them....

Re: Dave Brubeck's "Take 5" - keeping time

It's harder to play than it sounds. I played it at a gig I did with my former college jazz band teacher and some guys from the group, and we did that as my drum feature. I unfortunately didn't have...

Interesting cymbal positioning

I bought a copy of Aquiles' Priester's DVD "The Infallible Reason For My Freak Drumming" yesterday at Guitar Center. Fantastic DVD if you're into that type of music, or just want to hear fantastic...

Re: What's your favorite drum key? Serious!

This is my go to key, I also have a standard Tama key that came with my kit that I keep on my key ring that I use sometimes as well.

Re: So..what is your LEAST favorite song to play?

Haven't played with my cover band in awhile (we were never that active to begin with) but my least favorite was "It's A Long Way To The Top If You Wanna Rock And Roll"- totally repetitive and I...

Re: ADVANCED DRUMMERS: What are the top most challenging drum beats?

I wouldn't call myself an "advanced drummer" but the most challenging thing I've ever tried to play would be Keep It Greasy by Frank Zappa. Has lengthy sections of both 19/16 and 21/16.

Re: Gospel Drum Books

I haven't worked out of it myself but the Chafee book does sound like a good one for that style. Once you've got some of the fills down, work on starting them on off beats (e.g. the and of 3 or 4)....

Re: Transcription > Books for technique development?

Maybe not technique, but definitely to learn new, interesting musical ideas. And drums are a musical instrument, aren't they? I think the best thing is to do both!

Re: Modern jazz drumers and their influences

This is very true. I would call Joe Morello an influence as I absolutely love his playing, but the biggest thing I've got from him that I've incorporated into my drumming? Using a wood beater on my...

Re: Playing drums with glasses? ..yes or no...

I where contacts whether I'm playing drums or not as I'm almost legally blind without them, but I have worn sunglasses while playing outdoors and not had any problems.

Sorry if I sounded kinda snobby in my last post, but anyway I kinda feel the same way that Bo does about it. I've only been playing for a little over 2 years so I do work on my technique, I'm just...

Since there's one for books, I figured I'd start one for DVD's! Anything drum instructional or of drumming showcase events (e.g. Modern Drummer Festival, Buddy Rich Memorial shows), not concert DVD's...
