Re: Open handed technique

If a long time, accomplished player (such as Wy Yung) decides to play open handed, that's his/her choice. But for the less experienced player, I think the concept of setting up your kit differently...

Re: Open handed technique

That being said, teaching your left hand how to be independent (aka MORE CONTROL) you can create vocabulary you weren't able to before.

I've heard every proponent of open handed playing say this....

Re: Open handed technique

Just to play devil's advocate here...

The biggest con I've heard has been that you spend hundreds of hours working on stuff that will add zero to your vocabulary. In other words, you are learning...

Re: Negative Progress / Quitting

This is a definite possibility. I have seen this effect many times, At the outset, we can't even hear well enough to realize that we sound terrible. I remember, at age 15, thinking that I could play...

Re: Is Dennis Chambers ill?

It's obviously very serious. I sincerely hope that he recovers from whatever is ailing him. The world is a better place with Dennis in it.

To dwell on him for a moment: He is possibly one of the...

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

Betcha 5 bucks after listening it's the guitar player. 9 times out of ten it's the guitar player.

Seriously though, things like this are not a matter of opinion. The recording will show the truth.

Re: Auralex Hovermat?

Their claim of decoupling for this rug is bunk. There is no way that a simple rug can do that to any reasonable degree. And then to charge 3 bills for it...

I used their Platfoam and made my own...

Re: Double bass technique observations

My friend, you are speaking of Virgil Donati, one of the iconic drummers of our time, as if he were some unknown guy with a youtube channel (Jared Falk, cough). There are hundreds of videos of him...

Re: Wfd starts next thursday july 17

No, not at all. Mangini's technique specifically does not rely on rebound at all. He demonstrated it to me on a leather jacket. He uses it all the time on records for one handed 16th note ride...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Constructs transcription is correct.

It seems that you may have trouble feeling the offbeat eighth notes in relation to the downbeat.

1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4 and A 1.... (play the bold notes)

In...

Re: Inverted Double Stroke problems (Watched Bill Bachman's video)

This exercise will change your drumming life. Just put in about 2 months of daily work on it and your hands will be on a whole 'nother level. Don't be shocked when your single stroke roll gets better...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Five days to discuss a short break in a song? Really?

In all honesty, developing a basic ability to read music and count will give you the ability to hear and play this instantly.

Re: Tuning "experts" mini rant

I don't understand why anyone would watch those videos when there are vids online from guys like Bob Gatzen and John Good.

Would you listen to a legendary drum designer and the VP of DW drums or...

You subdivide your walking pace into odd odd note groupings and polyrhythms (played against the hand tapping on the thigh).

Steve Maxwell's Rules!

I bought a Pre aged K 20" light ride last week and was speaking to Jess in the NY store about how a recording engineer recently asked if I could get a 40 strand snare for my 13" Guru.

He took my...

Re: Practicing using different muscle groups on alternate days

If you are always sore after practicing then you are pushing the muscles too hard. Applying weight lifting strategies to practicing will lead to problems.

Re: Why is it so hard for the band to follow me?!?!

Oh man, is this so true. I played a gig recently in which the singer was so far off the beat on a 6/8 slow tune I had to just tune him out. After the show, he was totally surprised when I brought it...
