Try straight 16th notes and mix it up. Like, play singles to doubles to paradiddles while trying to maintain one consitant speed and volume. I do this alot to warm up before playing and it's a great...

My max speed is 16th's at probably around 210bpm if I take the time to warm up properly.
And yeah, "flying fingers" I believe is what I am looking for.

I don't actually use moongel or O rings. If you tune properly, I don't believe their needed.
And as far as duct tapping the shells, what I said was "I wouldnt do it"

when you hit the drum the shell vibrates, so if there is duct tape on the shells it could inhibit that vibration, losing some tonal qualities from the...

I wouldn't do it.
For one, there is a chance you will change the resonant tone of the shells themselves
And yes, it would most definity leave residue on the shells.

You can have the coolest looking, but the crappiest sounding drum set.

If you want something "cool" and sounds decent, go with Remo Ebony...

If everyone else is louder than the drummer, then something is very very wrong inside their heads. Its called "balance" Each member should be able to hear another member clearly, during rehearsals...
