Re: First time buyer advice

I have a Yamaha Stage Custom birch kit that I bought in 2011. I don't have any experience with the others. A new shellpack goes for $650 new so $350 used doesn't seem out of line. It depends on the...

Re: What drummers have marched?

I think Hannah Ford marched. I saw a video about her explaining her technique and she was saying that the marching instructor was really anal about the sticks having to be exactly 90 degrees apart....

I saw an interview with Pick Withers where he said he was in the drum corps.

Re: Not denting heads

I don't understand how some drummers see the broken sticks/cymbals/heads as a badge of honor. I guess that I'm just cheap and want my tools to last a good long time.

Re: Good exercises for developing mobility around the set?

I got the Drum Set Warmups book a couple of weeks ago and can already tell the difference. I'm only up to lesson three and I feel more confident and am moving around the kit with 15 - 20 minutes of...

Re: Deciding on Album Artwork?

Not really about artwork per se, but more about band photos.

Re: Important question from the new guy.

There are many pictures and videos on the interwebs of Gene Krupa's set up on an riser. I'm sure he wasn't the first to do so.

Re: Famous Metal drummers?

It's funny how the definition of metal has changed over the years. I was going through mo old Modern Drummer magazines and the January 1995 issue had an article entitled "Metal Drummers Round Table"....

Re: Technical question......Song endings

Well, there doesn't appear to be a consensus as to what these things are called. I don't believe that it's a fermata. If I remember correctly a fermata is also known as a hold or a pause. What I'm...

Re: Technical question......Song endings

I'm not above cliche'. I do the outro from Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" when the surf band plays "Wipeout".

Technical question......Song endings

What do you call the ending to a song where everyone just wails for about 15 or 20 seconds before a final cymbal crash? I've heard them referred to as concert endings, flourishes, and free-for-alls...

Actually she's from Quebec. She's a pretty good drummer.....For a Canadian. :)

Re: Double Pedal

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 58 and have always played single. I got the double bass book by Joe Franco. It's only been a week or so but I can see steady improvement. His technique (he calls it...

Re: Wearing hearing protection issue

I got the flesh-colored Hearos foam earplugs. 20 pair for $5 or $6. People can't tell you're wearing them unless they're standing right next to you.

Re: When people ask you to 'play something', what do you play?

I'll play a money beat fot three measures and then to a simple single-stroke roll down the toms and then end with a crash.

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Got some instruction books with the gift card I got for Fathers' Day. All three came highly recommended.

Re: Favorite Song to Rock out To?

Probably "Summer of 69" by Bryan Adams. It's instantly recognizable, the women dig it, and it has some cool fills. What more could you ask for?

Re: Double bass technique observations

I got the Joe Franco book. I'm brand new to this double pedal thing. I'm just cracking the 100 bpm mark right now. It's cool though because I don't want to play speed metal and I don't really need it...

Re: Best Drum set for jazz?

I would say a 24x16 bass drum, 13x9 and 14x10 mounted toms, 14x14, 16x16 and 18x16 floor toms and a 14x6 1/2 snare. That's what Tony Williams played.

Seriously, you can use any drum set to play...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

As been said before, hate is a pretty strong word. They don't work for me. When I deal with amplified instruments they just don't seem to cut through.

Re: Drum buyers block

I'm confused. First you say that you have two other kits, and then that you're in need of a second kit.
