Re: hihat position: the glitch

That's possible.. I've been trying them lower lately. It does seem to be a bit less of a stretch and more in line with the arc of the stick.

I like the description of positioning by clock hands. I...

hihat position: the glitch

Do you ever catch a stick tip under the hihat cymbals when you're playing - and usually not looking? It happens rarely, but when it does it drives me crazy..it breaks the groove and if a mic is close...

Re: My Half Time Shuffle

Others like it? I'd say Bernard Purdie :-) Check out Steely Dan records..

One of my favorite Jeff Porcaro shuffles is:

Re: Bringing the beater back

I play heel up most of the time. Heel down can achieve the same speeds (see THomas Lang) and also naturally pulls the beater away from the head... but I find it puts too much focus on the ankle. I...

Re: Snare rim-click help

Yay for cross-stick .. boo for rim-click. (side-stick is also okay). Cross-over is crossing your hands, usually rolling around the toms.

Now that my pet peeve is out of the way. You need to...

Re: 1 measure lick ideas for solos

Ya... I agree with the other posters. Don't try to write out a solo; improvise and try to think musically or melodically with the tune at hand. If you have a MIDI keyboard you could record the basic...

Re: Fast Shuffle Technique

Really? In that case I use Moeller all the time but didn't know it! I stand corrected - I must be an expert on Moeller then! LoL..

All the demos I've ever seen on Moeller usually show the whipping...

Re: Fast Shuffle Technique

Haha.. not quite. I'm not a Moeller expert but there's no big whipping motion or up-down-tap etc.

Re: Fast Shuffle Technique

I think you're thinking it's more complicated than it really is.. there's no Moeller or push-pull techniques involved .. it's just a matter of letting the stick bounce with a steady rocking motion.....

Re: John Von Ohlen: Some Best Moments in Drumming Have Been the Simplest

Couldn't agree more..
but notice the angle on his snare?? I saw a guy in NY play like that.. and to play his hihat, he crossed his right arm UNDER his left! It looked bizarre, but because of the...

Re: If I would just buy one book on coordination...

I'd second Gary Chester's New Breed volume 1. (volume 2 is just more of the same but harder!). Great for independence.. but also great for sightreading a singing as well!

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

Haven't seen the video link yet.. but the movie Beware Mr Baker (on Netflix) pretty much sums it up; he's got some mental issues going way back, a former heroin addict, etc. He was a great drummer...

Re: Playing others' kits

LoL.. well at least you didn't have to lug that gear around, although it sounds like it would fit in your back pocket. Don't you just love it when a bar owner tries to spring that crap on you 'at the...

yes.. get really good at listening to a tune and ;
- break it down into (usually) 8 bar sections (intro, verse chorus, bridge etc, end)
- write out fast charts (shorthand).. note key dynamic,...

Re: First gig in 2.5 years!

No stage jitters allowed!
Just have fun, stay relaxed - and you'll play a lot better. I think I got stage fright once playing in front of about a 1000 people when I was younger.. but I developed a...

Re: What's Your Signature Fill?

No signature.. but I love playing big melodic tom fills that fit the music - with a right hand lead on the toms and left hand playing alternating ghost notes on the snare. Really simple but effective...

Re: Here are Benny Grebb & Bernad Purdie lessons On Drumeo

So a guy walks into a bar...

.. and it's none other than Bernard Purdie! I introduced myself and had a brief chat with him - he's such a nice guy! ..and later on the bandleader (an old friend of...

Steve Ferrone still rocks!!

I was watching one of those PBS fundraiser shows last night - something like a salute to Motown/R&B/Soul music at the White House... and partially because I've played most of those tunes in various...

Re: Stage Banter

As long as it's funny, spontaneous and short it adds entertainment value.. too long and you lose the dance floor.. if it's not interesting or funny it bores the audience.

I played in an Elvis...

Re: Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Great drummer - but breaks my showmanship rule.. all you can see is the top of his head.. which makes it really boring from an audience perspective. Also too many quad rolls. It was probably a drum...

Re: Should I start out with electronic drums?

If you're on a ship for a long stretch.. take a pair of sticks and get a decent practice pad ( a stand is good!) and some books. The classic Stick Control is so old you can download a PDF for free.....

Re: Muscle Seizing/Fatigue at Gigs

You can't beat water.. but I'd look at how you are burning up.. work at playing as loose and relaxed as possible.. even the most high energy gigs can be a walk in the park if you stick to that...

Re: I may have been doing it wrong all this time..

Yes.. my 'American' grip usage is pretty versatile depending on what I'm playing.. usually cradling the stick around the middle finger fulcrum; sometimes leaning towards the first finger for fine...
