Re: Thoughts On Phil Collins??

Brilliant musician. His stuff with 70s Genesis ranks among the best prog rock ever created.

Listen to Seconds Out and prepare to be blow away. The double drumming with Chester Thompson on...

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

I remember being a bored and mediocre university student who did not care about school at all. I then took an English course with a university professor who literally changed my worldview. He taught...

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

I agree - plenty of ways to expose a beginner to the drumset without overwhelming them. I remember my early lessons playing Syncopation on snare with bass drum and hi-hat accompanying. I don't know...

Re: Hey Lefty Drummers

Just like parents don't understand (sorry, had to throw in a DJ Jazzy Jeff reference there)

Seriously, though, being left-handed can be a serious pain, especially for an instrument like the...

Re: Hey Lefty Drummers

Yeah, that's the problem. I can play with the hi-hat on the left, and ride with either my left or right hand in many instances, but the big issue is what my feet are playing on and the tom set-up....

Hey Lefty Drummers

Realizing that this squarely falls within the context of "first world" problems, any of you get bummed out being a lefty drummer, particularly when using rehearsal space or playing on open mics?...

Playing with hiccups

Hi all,

Kind of a silly question, but any of you ever had to contend with a major bout of hiccups while gigging?

We've all had to deal with illness, anxiety, or tightness, while playing live....

Re: Upcoming Concerts You Will Be Attending

I was supposed to go to the Bozzio concert this Friday in Toronto, but a work commitment is forcing me to bail. :(

Really wanted to see that crazy kit in action.

Re: Worst song ever

What about "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt? Just a way overly sentimental song with a horrible chorus.

Re: Worst song ever

It's not so much the song I can't stand, it's that video. Seeing those little poseurs running around with their staged hijinks makes me want to take a baseball bat to the set and chase them around...

Re: Irony?

In the literary context, to be ironic denotes to state one thing while meaning another.

Re: When you're in charge, which songs ...

surprised the list of usual suspects haven't been flagged yet:

- smoke on the water
- stairway to heaven
- enter sandman

borderline entries:

- smells like teen spirit
- iron man

Re: To transcribe or not?

This to me is the real benefit to transcribing music, especially jazz. You really start to appreciate the form and structure of the music, and build a more refined ear.

Unfortunately, like...

Re: Open handed technique

Agreed.

Open handed implies that the hand playing the snare has unobstructed access to the various components of the kit, and is not reliant on what the crossed hand is or isn't doing. It doesn't...

Re: Practice routine while on vacation?

Thanks guys - agreed that the focus while being on vacation is to be on vacation. If I have some spare time later at night when the wife's asleep and I don't have much to do, I figured I'd get out...

Practice routine while on vacation?

Greetings fellow drumsters,

Just curious what some of you guys/gals do to practice and keep your chops up while away from the kit. I will be traveling for the next few weeks and am hoping to...

Re: Running out of breath while counting

That would work, but only if you're not counting subdivisions. I know for me, especially when learning new beats, it helps to count out some of the eighth notes too.

Re: Tastefully Overplayed

I agree with some of the above posts that "tastefully" and "overplayed" don't belong in the same sentence. It's either tasteful and fits in with the song or its overplayed and doesn't. but it really...

Re: Need forum wisdom (fusion "standards")

If you're talking Billy Cobham, arguably most of his debut album Spectrum makes the list. Quadrant 4, Stratus, and Red Baron are all pretty iconic fusion pieces. By extension, his stuff with early...

Re: Quick doubles on the kick

+1. It's critical not to automatically start playing heel toe as a crutch to otherwise spotty control/technique. Heel toe should only be used once the player has gone pretty much as far as they can...
