Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

They already have. PDP is not the flagship but it is a world traveling brand to be sure. I thought I read the bottom line DW's are as well

Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

There is a lot of truth to this. My Mapex kit's sweet spot was with coated or white suede ambassador weight heads. The PDP's work much better with a clear ambassador weight head.

While the...

Re: Your thoughts on this DW Collector Series kit

Not necessarily.. I have worked with several drummers who put the RIMS mount on the bottom to make batter head changes easier

Re: PDP concept or Sonor select?

I bought it from Guitar Center. I took advantage of a Black Friday discount coupon

Re: PDP concept or Sonor select?

I have no experience with Sonor, but my main kit for the last year has been a 7pc Concept Maple. In my opinion, you will have to spend 2-3 times the price to get better sounding drums. Maybe I got...

Re: Drums suck!

I would think that if both heads are tuned to identical pitch, they would move together and venting would be a non-issue. However in the real world they are never truly the same so therefore the...

Re: Drums suck!

Since you breathe in and out through the same vent, wouldn't the exhale be constricted as well if the inhale is?

Re: Putting band name on kick drum head, with multiple bands?

Clearly you need multiple kits, or at least multiple bass drums...

Beyond that, if these are short term gigs I don't think you have any obligation here. You should probably have your own name or...

Re: Catalina Club Jazz vs. Catalina Maple

I owned the Cat jazz kit fo several years and I would not consider it versatile. Sure you can "get close" but unless your primary gig is a jazz combo I would get something with at least a 20" kick...

Re: Why is it you never see threads saying....

Cymbals are odd birds. I can tweak a set of drums with tuning, head choice stick choice, muffling etc and get a wide range of possibilities.

Generally with cymbals, they are what they are. I...

Re: Trimmed down kits

1) Everyone but the jazzers went to bigger kits back then.
2) They did it in the 80's/90's. Why wouldn't people choose to do it again?
3) They are available in several configurations with addon...

Re: Trimmed down kits

Well unfortunately the vast majority are not jazzers. I love jazz, but I don't play it. It ended for everyone else in the 70's through the 80's. I saw plenty of locals giging the bigger kits back...

Re: Do we really need expensive drums?

I think part of the issue is defining "midrange". My old 7pc M Birch kit and my current Concept Maple 7pc would both be considered "midrange". As good as the Mapex drums are, they had aspects I...

Re: Trimmed down kits

I don't think it will take that long. We are long into small kit / conservative / keep it simple era. I sense people not in cover bands are getting a little bored with it and are looking to play...

Nonsense. The creative player is exactly who SHOULD have the large kit.

Re: Natural Talent or a Learned Skill??

"Talent" determines how many "skills" you can develop and how long it will take to master them

Re: What happened to the resonance?

Not necessarily but its a very real possibility as well. I have had this happen with isolation mounts.

Move the drum up and down the mounting arm in small increments and see what happens. If you...

Re: Why ya' gotta be so dark?

Speaking from my experience, darker cymbals record better to my ear. They also tend to be quieter which is also helpful in the studio. I have a Sweet ride and a few Armand crashes but typically I use...

Re: Why ya' gotta be so dark?

My KCon is a wonderful ride for small group jazz. Sits nicely under the horns with enough stick to hear the rhythm out front.

Its the last cymbal I would pick for a big band gig. Thats not really...

I have never had this issue. Not sure what to suggest
