Re: One or two mids toms?

The "traditional" china orientation (lip up, bow like a regular cymbal) is IMO only useful for riding. Hitting the edge of a cymbal angled like that... the thought genuinely pains me. Flipping it...

Re: I'm at a loss. I can't tune a drum to save my life.

And they don't have to remake their entire tone for each individual string every time they take one off!

Re: I'm at a loss. I can't tune a drum to save my life.

I use LP lug lube. Works as expected. Might help with a gunked up or poorly made lug insert.

As for concern #2, it's very hard to listen to individual pitches on a head and changing one rod will...

Re: Shallow toms - 20x16" Bass 8 10 12 14FT - Advice

;) Thanks! I've had great luck with the 15 after having had a 14-16 pair on my last kit and always just wanted something inbetween. Now if somebody would make a damn 11" rack tom...

Re: One or two mids toms?

Thanks! Those are S-Hoops which have a considerable lip over the head.

(the snare also has S-Hoops but I bought those more recently and it seems that they've reduced the size of the lip...

Re: Can't decide on a rack tom size for a jazz kit

I keep telling people... 11" toms are a necessity. Perfect size!!!!

I agree, the 12" will have much more of a tuning range. Most 10"ers just don't have that cranked jazz sound in 'em.

Re: Shallow toms - 20x16" Bass 8 10 12 14FT - Advice

Nice!! I also run the 10-12-15 setup and love it. 15s, while not easy to find heads for IRL, deserve much more popularity. Let us know how it is when it arrives!

Re: One or two mids toms?

Some call it laziness... I call it efficiency. And we're both right!

Re: One or two mids toms?

Here are some closer pics... just typical stand clamps with my right stand very close to the bass drum edge. The RIMS mounts and the particular Gibraltar clamp give one a surprising amount of lateral...

Re: One or two mids toms?

It's not as far out as it looks :) not unlike a cowbell's footprint (or, uh, kneeprint).

Re: One or two mids toms?

Absolutely agree. Adding a second rack tom only moves the ride about a foot if we move it laterally (even less if we put it more above the second tom rather than beside it) which isn't much in terms...

Re: Snare sound with Hot Rods?

Just took off the coating on the end of one of my Slats. Sounds way more natural, as one might expect (though the adhesive leaves a little residue). Best rute sound I've found yet, plus great...

Re: One or two mids toms?

I'd say that's the most popular config for new drums by far. Certainly in the intermediate kit range.

Re: Snare sound with Hot Rods?

I just got a pair of Vic "Slats" rods for a low volume gig. They're rectangular with 4 slats of bamboo around a foam core, not as quiet as typical rutes but they are quieter and have good rimshot...

Re: Full new setup – Mapex Saturn V and A customs!

Saturns are great kits, congratulations. And that hardware should last for a while. Getting any heads for it?

Re: Your approach to supporting a solo.

That's pretty much exactly it... a modicum of rhythmic ornamentation during the solo is almost always good in my view so I listen in to the improv solo and try to mimic some things, or work out some...

Re: Shallow toms - 20x16" Bass 8 10 12 14FT - Advice

Ah, you're correct. Weird naming.

I have not but they seem to be the same shells as the old Meridian kits which are pretty well-regarded.

Re: Shallow toms - 20x16" Bass 8 10 12 14FT - Advice

In my opinion, your situation is exactly what the Mydentity kits are good for. You won't find a kit in those sizes new that's as decent as the Mydentity maples for anywhere near $800, as far as I...

Re: Click Tracks

Oh yeah, that's what I meant to say. It was just funny to me because 1 bpm is a very, very subtle effect. I often use 2 or 3 bpm jumps in my own "tempo maps" but if one uses a 1 bpm shift there...

I don't think so...? Here's a screenshot of what the Audacity file typically looks like.
