Re: Next Biographical Film of Musical Artist?

I did not care for Rocketman one bit. It was a true musical, meaning they break into song at wacky places, which I don't particularly care for.

There was one scene where Elton had a party at his...

Re: The Great Philippine Mahogany Lie

While on one hand I agree with the premise, in my experience the wood does color the tone. If not every drum would sound exactly the same.

Compare a stainless steel drum to a wood drum and right...

Re: Band give aways /Burner sticks

Another good story. I still have a napkin some dude handed me that says You Rock.

I like how you leveraged your power position to your advantage :)

Re: Mixing Brands Drums/Cymbals/Hardware

It's 6 of one half dozen of the other, mixing or matching. Whatever trips your trap. Sometimes I forget to even notice what someone is playing if the playing is awesome.

Re: Band give aways /Burner sticks

Funny story. I bet a dollar that in the guys mind, he was a God.

Been there, so I can't say anything. I used to be a God too ha ha.

Re: Tom Sawyer was easier for me to play than Son of a Preacher Man. How can I develop better "feel?

Extremely well said. Especially the more dramatic part. Like you're keeping your cool when everyone else is gearing up for some big change, except the drums. He knows what's coming and isn't changing...

Re: Your practice time...pleasure to work ratio

Re: walking away from a practice session annoyed...

This is my goal. I know I was working hard if I come away frustrated.

When something is frustrating me, sometimes I will take a 5 minute...

Re: Tom Sawyer was easier for me to play than Son of a Preacher Man. How can I develop better "feel?

With groove, in some cases, space has to be left to allow the listener's imagination to fill it in. If I pass up a fill opportunity, I will get tension in return. Which is a really great deal. Fills...

Re: RATE THIS

Even now that I know it....it's still a difficult beat to play convincingly. A lot of stuff has to integrate together beautifully like a Swiss watch.

So yea, 5.

Re: Tom Sawyer was easier for me to play than Son of a Preacher Man. How can I develop better "feel?

Opinions and suggestions only:

I didn't think your "Preacher Man" video was bad at all. Everything can groove deeper though.

To surgically work on groove, my recommendation would be to get...

Re: Do you have any OCD-type traits about your drums/set-up?

I have to have sticks in my hand.

I have to be sitting down.

There has to be a drum kit to play

The bass drum can't be behind me.

I HAVE to have a footpedal or I wont play.

Re: This was a topic of discussion the other day

It occurs to me that maybe chicky baby likes you Mike. Maybe she wanted to push your buttons to see if and how well you defended yourself.

Girls definitely test guys without letting on.

Your practice time...pleasure to work ratio

Meaning do you play to recorded music (pleasure) or work from a book or on your technique for instance.

I learned to play from records, but now all I do now is work on stuff. I haven't played to...

Re: Choosing a Used kit: best value? ($1000 budget)

What are the chances that the photo is an 18" deep drum, because it was easier as they had photos already? (You both may be right)

I didn't even know they made Saturns in less than an 18" depth....

Re: Choosing a Used kit: best value? ($1000 budget)

Another vote for the above.

A great snare, great hi hat cymbals and a great ride cymbal are first priority. The drums next. And sticks :) I'm assuming you have all the hardware you need. Yes? No?...

Re: The last ever Guru Origin kit

Integrity indeed. In spades.

You could look at it this way...

You made your mark on the drum building community, plus some. You did that in a fairly short amount of time. You've given the world...

Re: The last ever Guru Origin kit

I wish. Sigh.

If he would build more, I'd ask him to build some toms for my latest maple segmented kick and snare. Only because I love them SO much :)

If I had a full set of maples, and I had...

Re: The last ever Guru Origin kit

I guess the best thing to do now is to stop grieving the loss, and instead, celebrate the legacy of what's IMO the most cutting edge AND more importantly, successful acoustic drum designs EVER....

Re: Consolidating Gear-Opinions Welcomed and Appreciated

This is somewhat fascinating to me. Never in a million years would I have guessed that there would be a culture around wet shaving.

So if there are shaving forums, there must be a forum for every...

I thought this was what you were talking about but I didn't want to assume anything. So that's cool. I always wanted to get a straight razor. Then I think about it. A fairly long razor sharp blade...

Re: Bass drum help

How is your bass drum set up? Port? No port? Muffling? Tuning? Heads? Size? Mics?

Porting and muffling is a tried and true way to get a good sound out of the bass drum with mics.

Re: How often do you tune?

Almost every time I sit down at the drums.

I always have a sound I'm after when I tune, which is completely mood dependant.
