Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

I've been using a 4 piece kit with just 3 or 4 cymbals for years. But in the past I used to play on another drummer's kit all the time at a shared practice space which had hats, ride, crash, china,...

Re: So and so is a good drummer, but...

I think Bermuda summed up the discussion nicely pretty early on. "So and so is a good drummer, but not a good musician" versus, "So and so is a good musician, but not a technical/creative drummer". I...

Re: Did Bill Bruford stop practicing for a while?

I love Bill's playing on KC's Red. He plays deep, funky grooves with unusual touches like oddly placed China accents, cool fills, and just a really out of the box approach that fit KC like a glove....

Re: If you could research any drummer...

I'd be interested in who came up with the initial rudiments. Who was the first person in history to pick up a pair of pieces of wood and do flams, paradiddles, doubles, single stroke rolls and...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

In some contexts they work, and enjoy listening to some player's use of them. For my own playing, I'm not really into them. I used to have one, but haven't had the need to incorporate one into my...

Re: What's the best things about your playing?

My right foot. Everyone always mistakes it for a double pedal, even had to show people up close to get them to believe me, but I do it out of habit to propel the music, mix it up, and spice up...

Re: Ghost Drummer for Kiss, Jimi, Alice Cooper etc

An example I can think of of non-drummers being replaced in the studio but still credited and playing live with the band was Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan had to record all the bass and guitar...

Re: Led's Latest Page

Yep, John Paul Jones versatility has been well established at this point. before and after Zep. And to add to this, Bonham was a totally different animal in the studio versus on stage. In the studio,...

Re: Where do you draw the line with Frankenstein?

My kit couldn't be closer to Frankenstein if I pulled the electrical switch and said, "It's Alive!". :P Nobody has ever said anything, people have complimented my drum sounds a lot even though I use...

Re: Songs With Bored Drummers

I thought the initial topic was drummers that seem like they are just phoning it in or seem bored to us as drummers. Now it seems like the discussion is more about what drummers find exciting or what...

Re: What do we think of drummers that deliberately play out of time?

Yeah great point! To say that Take Five isn't a solo would be a stretch. If any other instrument plays a solo with accompaniment we call it a solo, but when drums do it we don't? Why would drummers...

Re: What do we think of drummers that deliberately play out of time?

Have to agree Tony. I don't think I've ever heard Tony Williams play his metric modulation/time manipulation licks and think that it is unmusical or didn't fit the situation or the musical moment...

Re: Using a Metronome/Click on stage

This is because these drummers haven't internalized the quarter or eighth note pulse and don't know where the fills they play land in time (basically just guessing and hoping for the best). If a...

Re: Using a Metronome/Click on stage

To your first point, I don't think that's true at all. All you have to do to keep time perfectly with the click during a fill is to keep your left foot doing quarter or eighth notes. If you are doing...

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

This topic reminds me of a Bruce Lee quote I saw referenced on this forum a while back. "A punch is just a punch, a kick is just a kick". Basically before he really understood martial arts, a punch...

Re: Seeking Metal Drummer with mics

Gotta go with the consensus here. Pony up real dough or get a drum machine.

Re: Rock Gigs Not Very Rock Anymore?

Nail on head! People too busy on the Twitter-verse to put their phone in their pocket and direct their undivided attention to the stage like people..... actually excited to watch musicians express...

Re: Rock Gigs Not Very Rock Anymore?

That was my impression at the last local show I went to. I checked out a metal show, and people were pretty much chatting, using their cell phones, and all but ignoring the extremely loud music in...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Another one... *ducks*

After listening to Pearl Jam's Versus, Dave Abbruzzese plays some cool grooves, and adds in nice fusion-y touches like splashes and cymbal accents. I like the drumming, but...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

You are entitled to your opinion, but to my ears he plays with zero dynamics on the recordings as well, and plays too rock influenced to be genuinely funky. Even in interviews he talked about trying...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Have to agree about Chad Smith. He plays with zero dynamics, just bashing every single note and playing similar grooves in every single song with lots of bashing on hats and crashes. I liked him as a...

Drummers you enjoy, but would never consider playing like?

I remember years ago listening to extreme metal bands like Slayer, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Death, Nile, Meshuggah and wanting to play like the drummer I heard "some day". After...

Re: A new model for record labels?

I think record companies shot themselves in the foot with poor quality control personally. How many albums have come out in contemporary music that were just 1, 2, 3 quality singles and maybe 2/3's...

Re: "Nobody cares about the drummer, except for the Rush guy."

I think drummers have a bit of a problem. If the drummer isn't all flash, the audience doesn't pay attention to the drummer, and says, "Another boring drummer." If a drummer is flashy, it may...

Re: Most egotistical genre ;)

I honestly think it's a pretty silly argument. When people go to blues and funk shows, they want to dance, and the band behaves accordingly (i.e. restrained, dance oriented). When someone goes to see...
